Picks up more in the 420s, at least In the east. And I agree with Andrew here that this evidence is largely for cities. Countryside is 🤷‍♀️ in many places.

Sundays and festival days. Defunding of temples and restrictions on “pagan” (and later Christian factions not supported by the imperial court) as a way of eliminating those spaces as options in the cities. But that process is still rather piecemeal until the mid-390s.

My set-up varies a bit by project, which is why I like the flexibility of Scrivener. Here’s a recent project, which looks like it might be comparable to your process. Drafts in the upper binder, notes below (sections are nested)

That could have made its way into Christian pre1850 commentary traditions through consulting Mather’s manuscript, but print copies are only recently available (and expensive). Still, the presence of this idea in Christian “tradition” should probably be treated cautiously.

Oh, quick update, bc I just rechecked our volume: Cotton Mather references 316 precepts in his Biblia Americana. There he cites Samuel Nachmias as asserting they “are observed by no body,” and thus “confut[ing] all Jewish Superstition.” See CM Bib Amer v8, p821 {proofs; my publ copy isn’t at hand}.

I’ve not seen it mentioned in any English biblical/theological commentaries prior to 1845, and those all point to Maimonides. Certainly not something I’ve patristic authors mentioned (and that’s where I’d go to find a Christian “tradition”)

I have actively complained to students about how tyrannical Word and GoogleDocs has become, then walked them through the process of turning off the spelling and grammar checker. (And now the protective text and AI tools.) Infuriatingly, the process seems to change every time we do that.
