Trump’s efforts to gut the federal workforce should be understood as part of the broader Republican project to make public services shitty so people will hate and resent the government. For other examples, see most red states. Republicans do not want a government that actually works for people.

Something I’ve stressed in talks and interviews since the election is that we will not have restored the peaceful transfer of power in the U.S. until a Republican president willingly hands power to a Democratic president.

GOP lost the races for governor, LG, AG in North Carolina. so their new law: —strips governor of the authority to appoint election boards —strips governor of authority over Highway Authority —strips lieutenant governor of energy role —strips AG of their ability to oppose legislature ... and more!!!

GOP Grabs Control of North Carolina Election Boards, Rushing to Negate November Losses
In their final weeks before they lose the ability to pass laws, Republican lawmakers gutted the powers of incoming Democratic officials and upended who runs elections.

North Carolina Republicans just took the final vote on this massive power-grab, muscling it through the House over the governor's veto. That's the ballgame. A HUGE change in how the state government operates, giving Republicans much, much more power. andersonalerts.substack.com/p/sb-382-fin...
Prevents Gov.-elect Josh Stein from appointing members onto the State Board of Elections by transferring that authority over to Republican Auditor-elect Dave Boliek.

Makes the State Highway Patrol an independent agency and requires Stein to get the General Assembly’s approval for a five-year appointment

If a Supreme Court or Court Appeals vacancy emerges, Stein must fill it from a list of recommendations provided by the political party of the departing judge, thus preventing him from filling a potential GOP vacancy with a Democrat.

Removes the seats of Wake County Superior Court Judge Bryan Collins and Forsyth County Superior Court Judge Todd Burke. Collins and Burke have ruled against election law changes that GOP lawmakers have put forward over the years.

Prohibits Attorney General-elect Jeff Jackson from participating in lawsuits that undercut actions taken by the General Assembly. The bill says Jackson “shall not, as a party, amicus, or any other participant in an action pending before a state or federal court in another state, advance any argument that would result in the invalidation of any statute enacted by the General Assembly.”

Prevents Lt. Gov.-elect Rachel Hunt from chairing committees on energy issues. The bill also eliminates the Energy Policy Council, which has been chaired by the lieutenant governor.

Prevents Democratic Superintendent of Public Instruction-elect Mo Green from appealing decisions made by the Charter Schools Review Board.

Reduces the timeframe voters can “cure” their provisional ballots from nine days to three days. Provisionals tend to favor Democratic candidates and proved essential to Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs’ efforts to overtake the lead of Republican Court of Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin.

The GOP is apparently planning on passing a reconciliation package with as much as $120 BILLION in border-related funding. To put that in context, if you add up ever single Border Patrol budget from 1990 through 2024, adjusted for inflation, it's $121 billion. That's THIRTY-FOUR YEARS of funding.
Incoming GOP leader John Thune is actively seeking ways to make next year's border and defense package deficit-neutral, if not deficit-negative.

Why it matters: Despite pushback from House Republicans, Thune is full steam ahead on his two-part reconciliation plan for next year, sources tell us.

The border portion of the first reconciliation package — which also includes energy and defense — could be as much as $120 billion, a source familiar told us.

Median net worth of an American 35-44 is $135,600. Elon Musk spent $250M to elect Donald Trump President. At .07% of his net worth (~$348B) that's like a typical American spending $97. Ninety-seven dollars.

The final House results have now landed as 220-215 for the GOP. That means the House majority came down to the 3 NC seats the GOP flipped thanks to its brand new gerrymander. And that gerrymander hinged on NC's supreme court flipping in 2022. I wrote this last month: boltsmag.org/state-suprem...
After securing a majority on the North Carolina Supreme Court in 2022, Republican justices promptly overturned a ruling that had struck down GOP gerrymanders, paving the way for their party’s lawmakers to draw a new map designed to hand them several congressional districts. By then, Democrats already had no recourse outside of state courts: This U.S. Supreme Court has shut the door on complaints of partisan gerrymandering proceeding in federal courts.

The maneuver paid off last week. The GOP flipped three U.S. House seats, a windfall in light of that chamber’s tiny overall margin.

“Don’t feed the trolls” also extends to bad opinion pieces in papers of record. They run them bc people react to them the most. If we stop linking to bad columns and instead post thinkers we find valuable (& generate convo around it), incentives change. It’s not easy and takes constant practice!
