NIH wants to replace grant scores and percentiles with three broad categories, and withhold scores from applicants, staff, and Advisory Councils. Some discretion makes sense, but no scores makes a vague process even more of a black box. Pls comment by October 13: rfi.grants.nih.gov?s=6a2b1c22c3...

The Trump Administration’s racist science policies have achieved some of their goals. The number of Black Principal Investigators has dropped by 10% between 2024 and 2025; while the number of Hispanic PIs has fallen by 7%. For research trainees, the numbers are far worse.

Summer of ‘89! This song and the album that followed - Fear of a Black Planet. On the turntable at home, cassette tape in the car. I started noticing a lot of things that I hadn’t noticed before. It changed who I am and how I see the country I grew up in

Let's learn about some medical research that just left Earth on Artemis II, bound for the silver sphere in the sky. It's AVATAR, but it doesn't involve blue aliens. It stands for "A Virtual Astronaut Tissue Analog Response" & it looks like this USB drive-sized device.
A human hand holds a plastic object that is a sort of prism or rectangular plastic object the size of a USB thumb drive. It has blue and red lines that meet in the middle, but sort of cross at each end, producing an extended "X".

Reupping Sadly, the match imbalance, which we thought had peaked in 2009-10 and in recent years had almost disappeared due to APPIC et al.’s hard work, seems to be returning 😞

Please stop saying the bill allows "no more multi-year funding" - or at least be clear the 'more' is in reference to disastrous FY25 levels. The bill allows 39% MYF, same as in FY25, which contributed substantially to a 24% drop in new research. The bill has some wins. MYF is not one of them.
