for a while after ff14 arr's release, I think our stomachs were full of the things it did well and we needed some time to digest that & arrive at the things it did poorly -- the shortcomings of its convenience-based, solo-friendly approach have become more evident with time and continued development

so imo a large portion of the initial dislike for ds2 was rooted in the idea that those same exact rough patches would be a recurring part of fromsoft's games from then on, and not so much in the game as it was on its own. only after 3 came out did it really get to exist as its own thing

a game's first sequel is kind of an interesting psychological issue because the changes, omissions, etc. that it makes will be extrapolated by the audience to represent What The Series Is Now. there are a couple ways in which that context put ds2 in an unflattering light, which lessened after ds3
