Thank you so much, this means a lot. It’s not @makespaceforgirls.bsky.social who lead this, it’s me Abigail ‘Make Space York’ - Initially inspired by the ideas of MSFG. This project is York’s and the girls have steered it.

Today’s spot in the Rowntree Park long borders by volunteer gardening lead Stu - the Knot Grass caterpillar. This is a new pollinator spot in the park! Want to know more about Rowntree Park pollinators, then pick up a leaflet from the cafe and enjoy the art and info trail.

Perhaps. But I would say that we have no MUGA in the park. We do have a basket swing (in the area girls co created). Therefore I’m not sure what we do or don’t have influences areas. They were asked to think about parks generally as girls from all over York came to get involved in this.

Thank you! I totally agree that the simple additions have had a huge impact (to adults too, who I love seeing enjoying the basket swing in day times!) The area is well used and the girls talk proudly of what they are helping create. Totally agree we have some lovely skaters who help others.

This comes from engagement work with teenage girls in a park in York. And you see all those things with two dots by them. Those make up 90%+ of what we currently provide for young people in public space. Whereas the things that girls want - they just aren't there. Let's do better.

A list of park facilities with dots by them, representing what teenage girls would want to see more of in parks. Popular are swings, hammocks and balancing beams and climbing logs; unpopular are skate parks, basketball courts, BMX tracks, MUGAs.

We’ve been engaging with local girls since 2022 with surveys, focus groups, workshops and drop in stalls. Lots of data and used this to co create a space and a festival of events. Forgot my personal Bluesky password! (Abigail).

The gynandromorphic Mallard at Rowntree Park. Head bright green like the male Mallard but with golden speckles at the top of the head and below the eye. The bill is yellow with dark mottled areas. Back paler than the male's but sides as light.

This is a male Mallard. Head is bright breen, bill yellow with just a small dark area at the tip. Chest a uniform chestnut colour. Back is dark, sides are light brown/beige

This looks like a male Mallard but the chest is white with dark red patches. Sides are darker than the previous Mallard's with a reddish tinge.

2 Male Mallards and a very dark smaller duck with a white chest, dark bill. One of the park gardeners told me it was a hybrid but uncertain of the species. He believes it is a female.
