I'm a poll worker. My county does party committee races that are always "pick up to 13 of these 22". A whole lot of voters either can't parse the question or can't count to 13. A surprising number of people will vote for someone on the ballot and then write them in too, I guess just to make sure.

I will say, I'm dealing with a technical writing client who insists, falsely*, that my agency is using LLMs to generate content. The "tell," best I can figure, is correct syntax. So. *I am quite confident b/c I substantially rewrote the deliverables myself, unassisted. iThenticate concurs.

One of my cats loves to play fetch but doesn't always bring the toy all the way back. The grabber can work quite well for that!

If you find yourself in the Philadelphia area, you might want to avoid this regional specialty. Different textures, similar flavor profile: www.peanutchews.com

Those are the peanut butter molasses taffies, right? I like those too, apparently you can order them as "peanut butter kisses" from Candyland (currently out of stock) and elsewhere.

So my process has gone from "search, scan results, don't see good sources, decide if I need a different search" to "search, scroll past AI summary, don't see good sources, scroll up, read AI summary, click through to see sources, then, if good, figure out if the AI summary was even accurate."

Rouroboros @rouroboros.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
My specific annoyance is that I always need the primary sources, and I often find that even when the AI has chosen the sources I want, the actual source links are nowhere to be found on the first page of search results.

I knew about Christopher Plummer as Henri the pigeon in An American Tail and Jerry Orbach as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast. Are there more? If any other live action icons did a song in a ridiculous French accent in a 1980s animated feature, please tell me now and spare me more surprises.

There was a contemporary fanfiction site called the Darth Maul Estrogen Brigade. The linked/possibly spinoff Sith Academy site (I don't recall the exact relationship, but I think there were some shared authors) was epic.

This one is so weird. There are already safety rules, because of course cis women and girls can and do hurt each other playing sports. The answer to a hypothetical 6'3" trans girl playing unsafely is the same answer as if it were a young Gwendolyn Christie.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

The trains get delayed when there's a heat wave and the wires sag too much, that I know. One of the seasons of SEPTA Regional Rail, along with slippery rail in the fall and "oops we have to go de-ice the switches" in the winter.

I had to look it up the first time I went digging for local news on why there were low-flying helicopters! For some reason they like to refer to this activity as "catenary inspection." (It refers to wires hanging a little slack between 2 uprights, or maybe specifically to the shape they make.)

I live near a rail line with overhead electric, and they periodically fly helicopters very low for catenary wire inspection.

(And now I am imagining newlywed Cordelia saying all pragmatically, "Oh, I should check, do you want to be monogamous or not?" and sending Aral into a choking fit.)

I never thought about it, but in fairness, on Beta Colony, "You know [your new husband] is bisexual?" would probably only be relevant as a proposition for a threesome, so I suppose I could read it as a polite but firm "not interested."

A top contender among many great Cordelia moments: "Yes, but he's monogamous now," followed 10 minutes later by the realization that that had not been the expected reaction.

Oddball opinion, but for starting Bujold on the SF side I recommend Falling Free. She was hitting her stride by then, it was written to stand alone if the Vorkosigan books didn't take off, and the engineering stuff is fun. The Vorkosigans are wonderful, but you do have to read a few of them.
