Just arrived at our Airbnb. The owners are away but her dad stopped by to check all was OK. Really nice guy, very helpful and gave us loads of info about the area - the best walks, great pubs, and how 20 years ago a gunman murdered 14 people before killing himself at the property.

Bought my wife some windscreen wipers for Christmas cos hers were hugely noisy and juddery. The joke did not land well - but fitted them today and ooooh they’re whisper quiet.

I know bugger all about art, but after visiting the National Portrait Gallery today I do know that one of these winning Portrait of The Year (painted - these are all paintings) ahead of the other three is fucking ridiculous.

Filling the endless school holiday void we went to a farm on the other side of the valley. What a fab way to spend an hour. Here I am stroking a goat while my nine-year-old zooms in on my face which is his current favourite thing to do because “you look confused by everything”.

Thought you couldn’t beat Warburtons Toastie bread, but the way the slightly concave heel of a Jacksons loaf gently cups your beans is perfection.

At a place in Wales which is doing all these beers 2-for-1, plus 10p from each can goes towards saving orangutans or something. TO THE ORANGUTANS!

Was tasked, at five hours’ notice, to rustle up a costume for tonight’s school disco on the theme of ‘Historical [pre-2000, gasp] figures’. Quick trip to town and I have produced this for my nine-year-old. “IT’S TOO NICHE” says my wife. 🙄

Mrs does the menu, I do the cooking. Made an awful crab and tomato tagliatelle for tea. "What did we think of that?" she asks while the 9yo fake barfs in the sink and I eat a Cornetto to take the taste away.

Share a piece of lore about yourself. I was walking down a busy street behind a bloke who looked a bit like Ian Brown so I started singing a Stone Roses song really badly and out of tune. He stopped, turned round and gave me a Paddington hard stare. It was Ian Brown.

Took an injured blackbird in this week (wonky neck, maybe flew into a window) who is off to a bird rescue place tomorrow. Have become quite attached! Will miss fishing the imaginatively named Birdy out from behind the bog/under the sofa.

The second-brightest object in the universe is a quasar located in a distant galaxy called J0529-4351, powered by a supermassive black hole and estimated to be 500 trillion times brighter than our sun. The brightest object in the universe is our village farmer Roy's hi-vis jacket.

Saw this on the moors today. What is it? Himalayan salt? Left it there cos I couldn’t be arsed carrying it for two hours. Glassy smooth apart from a broken off bit. Very alien to that landscape.

I held a door open for Tony Robinson at Birch Services in the late 90s. He broke into a half jog because, to be fair, he was further away than door-holdage warranted, but thanked me nonetheless.

Whenever I have a busy week, I dream about getting a newspaper out. I'm always in an unfamiliar office and there's always some tech issue. Last night, the (bobbins) splash was about a new toilet block - 'Relief toilet block opens' headline. Tired I know.

Comedy cabin crew on late-night flight from Brindisi to Manchester. “We’d like to welcome you on board this flight to Liverpool… haaa!” On bumpy landing: “Well I think we’re all awake after that. If any passengers wish to smoke, we advise you to quit. Welcome to Manchester - enjoy the weather.”

Son has a 3ft fishtank in his bedroom which requires minimal maintenance. Since Tuesday he's had 28 tadpoles he rescued from a puddle in a container and I'm running round blanching cucumber, trimming lettuce leaves and syphoning ridiculous amounts of poo out every night.
