Excited to share that our research group's latest "Survival of the Deepest" paper has been accepted! We outline how strengths of several ecohydrological feedbacks are likely different between #peatlands of different depths, leading to increased vulnerability of shallow systems.

Textbooks claim that the boreal region is species poor. This is FALSE. There is a tremendous amount of cryptic biodiversity in the moss and lichen species that literally blanket the north. We just need to slow down and respect the fairy forests.

Individual Sphagnum mosses lack structure and are prone to stress and desiccation. As an intertwined community, they fight off massive wildfires and protect the world’s largest soil carbon stock. They also nonchalantly preserve bog bodies. Learn from Sphagnum. Be the Sphagnum.

The first recipient of our July #PeatNeeds microgrants is Ian Clancy. Ian is working to quantify the carbon and GHG dynamics of grassland on peat in Ireland. To do this he uses the eddy covariance method with the Teagasc NASCO network and automated chambers on a site in Gurteen Co. Tipperary. 1/4
