One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Just last night while looking through B’s nursery intake paperwork (it being almost Reception Start Eve), we discovered we’d answered the Q ‘what do you hope for your child in the future’ with ‘for him to find out who he is and do it on purpose’. RIP, Dolly.

For some reason for me it’s “always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom”. It’s just so easy to append to any series of directions. Or any time the four year old is spinning just for the love of spinning.

Proposed London datacentre will have annual carbon footprint of 27,000 flights to New York
Exclusive: Planning documents show datacentre in north Ockendon will be incompatible with UK net zero targets A “hyperscale” datacentre in outer London would generate more than 1m tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, equivalent to the carbon footprint of 27,000 flights from London to New York, planning documents show. The East Havering Data Centre Campus (EHDCC) in north Ockendon would be one of the largest datacentres in Europe if approved by Havering council, using 218 hectares of green belt to run servers and data storage systems for AI and cloud computing. Its developer, Digital Reef, has described the scheme as “a unique opportunity to create a sustainable datacentre campus of the future”. Continue reading...

It's such a frivolous and unnecessary thing but being literally further away from affording this frivolous treat than I was when I started thinking about getting one this time last year is so fucking annoying.

I know this isn't news to anyone who's paying attention but I've been saving up, and I went to check the price of a @steampowered.com Deck and it's a) out of stock and b) £200 more expensive because of 'parts and data storage' and I know water is a bit more important but also fuck all AI forever

I have avoided engaging with it so far, mostly - but I know there are accounts I’m not allowed to look at and it feels very insidiously 1984 to me. I have a VPN for in case I actually for some reason really need to access the whole internet but it sucks.

It is pretty funny to see the new gigantic concrete ?planters? outside the station already being used for the inevitable purpose of ‘leaving random shit on them’ BY THE BUILDERS WHO ARE INSTALLING THEM. Someone’s also broken one of the big windows at least twice. We live in hope. 3/3
An absolutely gigantic concrete object which I assume is meant to eventually have some plants in the top, with various spare bricks, bits of paperwork, drinks cans and other misc items piled on top of it

So I really hope that the restoration of the station to its listed 50s brutalist glory does bring a bit of a more pleasant atmosphere to an undeniably grimy high street in desperate need of some love. THAT SAID. 2/3

I really try to be upbeat and positive about the area I live in. A lot of the criticisms of it come from people who moved out in the 70s and are shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, to discover that there are brown people living here now. 1/3

My new novella is just around the corner. Gothic horror sci-fi, an old house, a family secret; the British class system, a US visitor and something nasty in the woods.

It's not that I didn't know They Might Be Giants wrote both Til My Head Falls Off and Seven Days Of The Week, it's more that I didn't think much about that fact until I looked at them on my oh-god-please-do-some-work playlist and went oh TMBG definitely have ADHD huh

Who's seen all three types of solar eclipses? 🌑 Total   ⭕ Annular   🌙 Partial   On 12 august you've got a chance to see a total solar eclipse or a partial one, depending on where you are. 1/3 🔭 🧪 #EuropeanSolarEclipse
This infographic, titled 'Types of solar eclipse' presents three different solar eclipses. Running from left to right, a total solar eclipse looks like a dark circle surrounded by a glowing circular ring. At the centre an annular solar eclipse, which is also a dark circle surrounded by a ring, but the ring is more solid and thicker on one side. On the right a partial solar eclipse, which is a yellow crescent-shape. The ESA logo sits at the top right of the infographic.

I don’t know if you have ever been absolutely read to filth by your own four year old but the other day Son Boy said ‘do we have a smart speaker?’ And I said no and he said ‘that’s a shame’ and I’m like. I know you have one at nursery and my phone speaker sucks absolute balls but Mate.

Yikes. My sister is a horseriding instructor. I have maintained a respectful distance from horses since my final attempt to learn at about 10 when my horse simply decided it was not going on the same hack as all the other horses and correctly divined that there was bugger all I could do about it.

Marie Claire actually left a prompt from an AI in one of their recent articles. While there’s still some great journalists and publications left, this is utterly shocking. No wonder I’m trying to pivot.

✨This appears to be a long document!✨ It’s 8 pages and 3 of them are blank. ✨Save time by reading an AI summary!✨ I would be fascinated to find out how the AI would summarise 5 pages of 2-part choral music if I was willing to press this button - presumably ✨tum te tum te tum✨ or something

Reading the quoted post I was like ooh I don’t know what an epigone is I wonder if it means what it feels like it means It does. It very much does.
A screengrab of the Wiktionary definition of ‘epigone’: 1. a follower or disciple, 2. An undistinguished or inferior imitator of a well known artist or their style.

Anyway now he’s gone and that means I can hear the other four people within 5 metres of me who are playing videos out loud and I’m not actually certain it’s an improvement tbqh. I might be willing to negotiate with trolley wanker after all.

Also he got off at a stop I happen to know has no step free access and I am so curious whether that was the plan and he just gets off on annoying people on as many trains as possible or if he’s fucked it up

There was a wanker with a massive speaker in a shopping trolley on my train for a couple of stops and he DIDNT EVEN HAVE SPOTIFY PREMIUM So we were all subjected to fifteen minutes of music followed by a pleasant voice going ‘upgrade to Spotify premium to skip the ads!’ at top volume

I’ve just witnessed my first use of AI in the wild and it was a guy on my tube train who paused what I guess to have been AI assisted coding to ask grok (GROK) about allergic reactions to mountain plants.

The 2026 playlist is shaping up to be a bit of a mixture of new and old, several callbacks to favourites of past years. It’s mostly already a pretty good smooth progression vibes-wise but uh. What was I thinking here

I think the original intent of the Bingo card was original versions only - but if I want to achieve bingo on Christmas Eve via the means of an old fashioned fairground organ and an animatronic reindeer then I think I should be allowed.
