JUST IN: Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche says the Justice Department "fully supports [Chicago] U.S. Attorney [Andrew] Boutros."
Acting AG Todd Blanche

Since taking office U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros has steadfastly advanced President Trump’s mission to make Chicago and Northern Illinois safe for the American people. In 2025, U.S. Attorney Boutros increased indictments by 34% from the prior administration, and so far in 2026, he has increased indictments by 61% from the prior administration. Notably, under his leadership, the U.S. Attorney’s Office charged a leader of the Sinaloa Cartel with providing material support to a Foreign Terrorist Organization and secured the guilty plea of Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel’s “El Chapitos” faction. His office also recently charged the illegal alien who allegedly killed an 18-year-old Loyola University student. This Department fully supports U.S. Attorney Boutros and his efforts to combat violent crime, drug trafficking, immigration violations, and fraud, and we look forward to more great work from his office.

New: attorneys for U.S. citizen Debbie Brockman announced today that she's filing Federal Tort Claims Act claims against the govt. over her 10/10/2025 arrest by federal immigration agents in Chicago. Brockman, who last October worked for WGN, is now seeking $10M in damages.
Text of Debbie Brockman's FTCA claim rider, alleging she suffered battery, assault, false arrest, false imprisonment and other damages at the hands of federal immigration agents in Chicago last October.Image text:

DEBBIE BROCKMAN, UNJUSTLY DETAINED BY FEDERAL AGENTS DURING OPERATION MIDWAY BLITZ FILES $10 MILLION CLAIM AGAINST FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

CHICAGO, IL (June 2, 2026) – On Tuesday, Debbie Brockman, a United States citizen who was detained by federal agents during last fall’s surge in federal immigration enforcement activity known as “Operation Midway Blitz” filed a Federal Tort Claims Act claim against the federal government, a precursor to filing a lawsuit.

The claim alleges that on October 10, 2025, Brockman—who was employed as a producer at local television station—was walking to a bus stop as part of her morning commute to work when federal agents accosted her, tackling her and violently throwing her to the ground, battering her and exposing her buttocks, before handcuffing her and throwing her into a van. Brockman was humiliated and terrified that she would be killed. She was detained for approximately six hours without any legal justification before being released without charges. She was traumatized by the ordeal and suffers from anxiety and depression as a result of it.Image text:

The incident gained significant media attention last fall during a turbulent period that has already resulted in multiple lawsuits against the federal government for alleged violations of the rights of citizens and non-citizens alike.

Brockman asserts claims for assault and battery, false imprisonment, false arrest, and intentional infliction of emotional distress and requests $10,000,000 in damages.

Said Brockman, “It’s horrific that a government agency supposedly established to keep America safe is terrorizing communities, killing people, and violently targeting individuals they assume are not citizens. We are not safe with these armed, masked agents lurking in our neighborhoods showing little to no regard towards the lives of the people who live here.”

Brockman further emphasized that “[t]his assault has profoundly impacted my life on a day to day basis, leaving me uncertain of my future, my neighbors’ futures, and quite frankly the future of the United States.”

Brad Thomson of the People’s Law Office, one of Brockman’s attorneys, stated: “The outrageous actions of the federal agents who attacked Ms. Brockman demonstrate that they believe they can terrorize our communities and snatch our neighbors off the streets with impunity.” Nora Snyder, one of Brockman’s other attorneys from People’s Law Office stated, “Ms. Brockman is pursuing legal action to send a message that the federal government can and will be held accountable for its lawless behavior.”

from the oig press release 👀:
OIG’s advisory reflects that, following DOL’s refusal to provide OIG with requested records, OIG submitted a covert and anonymous request for those records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). DOL produced the records which it had previously declined to provide to OIG in response to that FOIA request, in a determination at odds with a suggestion that the records were so confidential as to be exempt from oversight. OIG further notes that, in the Shakman litigation, DOL itself argued before a federal court for the importance of OIG’s “free hand” in overseeing the City’s employment practices.

“DOL’s withholding of employment records from OIG is improper given the scope of OIG’s authority under the Municipal Code of Chicago, DOL’s statutory duty to cooperate with OIG, and DOL’s own legal arguments on the importance of OIG’s oversight of the City’s employment practices,” said Deborah Witzburg, Inspector General for the City of Chicago. “DOL eventually acknowledged that the very records it withheld from OIG could not properly be exempted even from public release when it produced them in response to an anonymous FOIA request covertly submitted by OIG. This fact is difficult to reconcile with a good faith rationale for refusing to provide them to OIG.”
