Politics nowadays are pushing society toward confrontation rather than cooperation. On March 14, @ronlevi.bsky.social & I are thrilled to host @bernardharcourt.bsky.social for a keynote lecture on working together in these conflictual times. Register & join us: munkschool.utoronto.ca/event/cooper...
In a recent book titled Cooperation: A Political, Economic, and Social Theory, Bernard E. Harcourt outlines a vision of a cooperative society based on worker and consumer coops and mutual aid. The current political climate, the rise of extremist parties, and the developments on university campuses seem to be pushing society toward conflict and confrontation rather than cooperation. How can we think about cooperation in these conflictual times? Join us on March 14, 2025 from 5:00PM - 6:30PM in the Boardroom and Library of the Munk School at the University of Toronto, aT 315 Bloor St. West, Toronto, M5S 0A7Bernard E. One of my all-time favorite sociologists passed away yesterday. May you rest in peace, Howard Becker. #Sociology
Elijah Anderson tweeted: Howard S. Becker, my dear former teacher and mentor died yesterday afternoon in his beloved San Francisco at 95. He rested peacefully at home and was in no pain. I will always remember Howie, and the careful instruction he gave to me as a young qualitative field worker. RIP.

every once in a while, it's best to just take a few minutes and go back to read Howie Becker. "Scholarly worlds embody a deep ambivalence, mirrored in the opposing attitudes of get-it-out versus take-your-time." Yup. And sometimes that ambivalence is within the same person, too.

I sometimes try to say what binds my interests. Now I read a stunning account in Rogues, of Patrick Radden Keefe‘s “abiding preoccupations” of “crime and corruption, secrets and lies, the permeable membrane separating licit and illicit worlds, the bonds of family, the power of denial.” Just wow.
