Towards noon whales were raised; but so soon as the ship sailed down to them, they turned and fled with swift precipitancy; a disordered flight, as of Cleopatra’s barges from Actium.

Nevertheless, the boats pursued, and Stubb’s was foremost. By great exertion, Tashtego at last succeeded in planting one iron; but the stricken whale, without at all sounding, still continued his horizontal flight, with added fleetness. Such unintermitted strainings upon the planted iron must sooner or later inevitably extract it. It became imperative to lance the flying whale, or be content to lose him. But to haul the boat up to his flank was impossible, he swam so fast and furious. What then remained?

This is mildly strange. I rescanned my apartment today with my vacuum cleaner, and it has suddenly detected an entire room behind my closet wall (top right) that doesn't actually exist. Where did you come from mysterious invisible hole in my wall

Starting to feel like people on r/Halflife are not doing well lately.
Screenshot of a locked Reddit post from r/HalfLife titled 'I have more hours in Half-Life 2 (lifetime) than words spoken to women (2025),' posted by u/GayroTL 4 hours ago. I really like this mural they have up in downtown Houston. She looks pretty even from far away up on the freeway.
Large-scale mural on the side of a multi-story building depicting a young girl in profile, with one half of her face and hair rendered in white/marble tones and the other half in golden yellow, holding a partially peeled pomegranate in her hand. She wears a flowing white draped garment. The mural covers most of the building's dark gray facade. In the foreground is an empty paved parking lot with two 'No Parking' street signs and a paid parking sign, framed by tree branches and city high-rises in the background under a partly cloudy blue sky.Downtown Houston skyline viewed from an elevated highway overpass (I-45), with a cluster of high-rise office towers and buildings under a dramatic sky filled with large clouds tinted lavender-purple. Nestled among the mid-rise buildings in the middle distance is the same girl-with-pomegranate mural seen from farther away, small against the surrounding skyscrapers. A line of trees and lower buildings sits in the foreground, with a light-colored highway barrier wall running across the bottom of the frame.

You know, I genuinely didn't think this sort of things actually happened IRL. I wonder what are the odds of me finding ancient gold coins if I start digging in the empty field next to this parking lot in Houston.

The person I was talking to worked in dynamic optimal transport, and of course I don't know how difficult the open problems in Transportation Theory are, but they seemed to think they could have some useful breakthroughs eventually. And this all only mathematicians, no CompSci/AI people involved.

Talking to the math people at my Uni, they were talking about setting aside a day each week where PIs and PhDs sit down with an (University-sponsored) AI agent and apply it to a pet theory. They seemed optimistic? I think?

The internet archive has no special priority in buying hard drives and those things are insane.

I read a science fiction short story on Clarkesworld about how Mercury was the core of a larger planet, which was stripped away during the early solar system by a Theia-like impactor, making it so densely iron I can see a sequel where an intrepid professor cuts Mercury wide open in the 21st century

Congratulations Skyroot on a successful maiden launch. Not going to lie I was a massive doomer on this but they've proved me wrong. Time for them to teach ISRO something about rocketry I suppose, as surprising as it may seem.
Aerial view of a white and dark blue rocket, labeled "Vikram I" with the Skyroot logo, standing on its launch pad at SDSC SHAR Sriharikota, surrounded by dense green forest and support structures. A countdown clock in the top right reads "-00:00:38:645," indicating seconds before liftoff.Aerial view of the same Skyroot "Vikram I" rocket lifting off from the Sriharikota launch pad, engines ignited with bright flame and billowing white exhaust clouds beneath it. A mission clock in the top right reads "+00:00:01:586," marking the moment just after liftoff, with launch tower and surrounding forest visible in the background.Onboard rocket camera view labeled "CAM3," timestamped 18/07/2026 12:10:42, showing Earth's curved horizon with clouds and ocean against the blackness of space. Part of a dark rocket stage is visible in the foreground. On-screen telemetry reads "MISSION TIME T+05:12" with a green status bar showing "Stage-3 Burn Out."Close-up onboard camera view labeled "CAM7," timestamped 18/07/2026 12:15:56, showing the satellite payload bay in orbit with Earth's bright limb in the background. A gold foil-wrapped satellite panel bearing the "Cosmoserve" logo is visible amid surrounding wiring, brackets, and a "COSMOS" labeled panel. On-screen telemetry reads "MISSION TIME T+10:27" with a green status bar showing "Cosmoserve Payload Power On."

One Cold Night
In a dimly lit snowy scene, a woman with red hair wearing a dark cloak stands in a field covered by white snow. Around her are many sheep with black and white faces and golden wool flaked with fallen snow.

I'm the background, beyond a wall, is a large stone house with large sash windows. Bright orange light invisible in the windows, and shadows of people and things inside can be seen. On either side of the house are tall bare trees.

A very intriguing result: the discovery of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the early Universe that seems to have formed before its galaxy. Still a lot of work to do to understand it, but this is an important step to understanding how SMBHs (more than ~1 million x the mass of the Sun) form. 🧪
