This week in Germany, a court ruled that the rejection of three migrants at the German border violated EU law. The interior minister, supported by the chancellor, sees no reason to change his policy. The judges on the case are facing defamation and threats. Worrying development for the rule of law.

Some people seem to dislike the Court’s reasoning in Malta but agree CBI is (morally?) wrong. If we agree the reasoning’s weak but the outcome right (which I don’t) Q = should courts pursue (what’s seems to be) policy-orientated (moral) outcomes?

Look I as everyone knows I dislike @deutschebahn.com and I'm already 2.5 hours behind schedule BUT Irish rail could never. A full dining car that has pretty decent coffee, breakfast, lunch, & dinner while travling at 200km/hr +, not too shabby... Ireland really needs to get its act together.

A thought on the day of Trump's Inauguration: I asked Alexa to define democracy & free speech. She gave what I would say are fairly good answers. However, when I asked what is hate speech she said "Hate speech is a term with varied meaning and has no single consistent definition."

As a non-resident Irish citizen I can’t vote in a general election for Dáil Éireann (lower house) BUT I can vote for the Seanad Éireann (Senate) because I’m a graduate of an Irish University 🤔 BUT my parents can’t elect senators despite living in Ireland because they didn’t go to university! 🤯

For any political nerds out there, it’s Irish election season and RTE Radio One is covering all the counts across the Island. A rare chance to see how a state using PR-STV runs its democracy, its full of twists and turns as transfers get allocated and probably the most fun electoral system IMO
