In response to the information that the US were torturing prisoners in Iraq using Metallica he variously said over the years: "If the Iraqis aren't used to freedom, then I'm glad to be part of the exposure" and "I'm honored my country is using something to help us stay safe" He's pure trash
In 2008, responding to the use of Metallica's music to torture Iraqi prisoners, Hetfield was unoffended and replied, "If the Iraqis aren't used to freedom, then I'm glad to be part of their exposure."[47] British band Chumbawamba subsequently released a song called "Torturing James Hetfield" in response.[48] In a 2017 interview, Hetfield reaffirmed his previous stance, saying, "I'm honored my country is using something to help us stay safe, if they are. But then again, once the music is out, I don't have control over that. Just like how someone's giving it away online. They're using it to do what they do

Screenshot of the NSW government fuelcheck service that allows you to see the price of different fuel types at different servos in your area super easily.

It also has this page that shows price trends and averages.

Currently the cheapest E10/U91 fuel in NSW is 219.5 with the highest being 58.4 cents more per litre at 277.9

The 7 day average graph shows a pretty consistent increase over the past 7 days, from just below 237.0 last Tuesday to the current 240.5 Today (Monday)

Saw a couple of Australasian Swamphens on the way back from the gym, hoping they might hang around the wetlands area for a bit so might head down with my dslr in a bit and try and get a photo of them, because they're pretty striking looking birds. Reference below for those who don't know them
A medium sized wetland bird with long red legs walling through some shallow water. Their plumage is a mix of a deep blue-indigo and black with a red beak and forehead shield.

Spotted this little white faced heron chilling on a driveway while walking back from the gym yesterday. No idea what they were doing so far from obvious water but cool to see nonetheless.

He did mention the other day, while sephiroth posting again, that if he ran things by comms then nothing would get posted so he just ignored them. So makes sense they'd have fired them because otherwise they're paying someone to do absolutely nothing but question their own sanity constantly
demon core vidal:

i am again going to politely entreat on you to stop posting about any policy anything without running it past your comms team. as politely as possible, you are not actually capable of being appropriately objective, which you *should* be when talking about policy

aaron rodericks

Yes I've tried that and we then don't post anything. See nearly any post from the safety account as an example.
Users keep demanding policy explanations daily and then make up their own random stories when there's usually an objective and repeatable process on our end (since we train mods).

I saw drama about folks not knowing a pop song, with this comment. My backyard parties aren't playing the top 40 hits or whatever sports games are famous for overplaying the same 5 songs from the 70s and 80s Starbucks being a measure of culture? Lol I don't know anyone under 60 with "live TV"
What I've learned from this is that lots of people just don't take any notice of the music being played at backyard parties, baseball games, your local Starbucks, live TV broadcasts, etc. That's fine! But those people probably aren't the best judges of what pop culture is ubiquitous

And what's their stated reason for imposing this mandatory wait time? Kicking the financial can down the road because the NHS is chronically underfunded and understaffed for dealing with modern healthcare.
Four NHS integrated care boards (ICBs) covering large regions of England have adopted the approach because they cannot afford the cost of the number of assessments that people are seeking.

They're open about the fact that earlier locations that had the age verification rollout were used as training data got the model, so presumably they really are just keeping on treating us differently because otherwise their ML model has nothing solid to re-check against
Training Data

Over the course of 2025 and 2026, Discord implemented age assurance technology in certain regions around the world in response to new legal obligations. Each rollout generated reliable age data from users who verified their age.

Users confirmed their age through one of two methods: Facial Age Estimation (FAE) or a government ID upload ("ID scan") paired with a matching selfie. The data from users provided as part of the age assurance process was only used to determine their age group, and was not received by Discord or used to train our models. Only the age group data itself (teen or adult) was used for model training and evaluation. As a condition of working with us, we require every age assurance vendor to only store what users submit for as long as it takes to confirm their age, and to permanently delete it immediately after.

Also, having just forced a discord update to install on my phone, here's what I see for age verification. So either it's only updated to show me that their age estimation has (predictably) failed for me but not added new verification methods, or they aren't universally rolling them out I guess?
Confirm your age Choose a method to confirm you're an adult. Once confirmed, you can access age-restricted content and settings.

The information you provide is only used to confirm your age group, then it's deleted

Video selfie via k-ID Estimate your age with a video selfie. Video stays on-device, no biometric data is shared.

ID scan via k-ID Scan your ID and take a selfie to confirm it's you. Both are deleted right after confirmation and never linked to your account.

In a shock to no one, both of my accounts (which are respectively 10 and 5 years old) have been automatically age estimated. There are servers I have over 93k messages on and yet somehow "we don't have sufficient info to estimate your age". Fuck off @discord.com and pull your head out of your arse
We don't have enough information to place your account in an age group yet and you want access to age-restricted content, spaces, or settings now. Additional safety protections apply in the meantime, while core features like messaging friends, joining voice calls or servers that are not age-restricted stay the same.

So a SurveyMonkey link, advertised in a free magazine given to GP practices. The suggestion being that the rate of positive diagnosis for referred patients is "suspiciously high" for those GPs referring patients for assessment. Maybe because the process and stigma self selects out so many?
The survey was open between 13 April and 7 May 2026, collating responses using the SurveyMonkey tool. The survey was advertised to our readers via the Pulse Today website and email newsletters, with a prize draw for a £500 voucher as an incentive to complete the survey. The survey was unweighted, and we do not claim this to be scientific – only a snapshot of the GP population. In total, 829 GPs answered the survey. To work out the averages, we applied a midpoint analysis to each question.

"I'm personally not affected by any of the various violent ways that the right wing has broken down societal order. I'm built different." says lib substacker while shielding his eyes to the "poor bastards" metaphorically tied to "dune buggies"
Actual revolution, far right or far left, has not come. But too many Americans seem to think we are immune to such a fate or, worse, that they would find themselves to be the beneficiaries. “Sure,” they seem to think “the violent breakdown of social order might be bad for some. But I’m built different.” Some deserving elites may die, but the virtuous will win out. And if not the virtuous, then at least the clever and deserving. As a friend noted, "They watch Mad Max and see themself as Max, never as the poor bastards tied to the front bumpers of the dune buggies."

In her book A Savage Order, Rachel Kleinfeld describes the ways countries fall into and become trapped in the miasma of violence. Kleinfeld and other researchers describe this deleterious process as “decivilization.” As Kleinfeld argues, “Decivilization’s deepest damage, however, is wrought not by professional killers but by ordinary people normalizing violence.” And the damage wrought by years of formal and informal violence tends to affect thousands, even millions, more lives.

So, according to congress (for the purpose of benefits at least?), the Gulf War is a still ongoing war. Presumably this is because it ended in a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty, but as a result all the conflicts since 1990 have been treated as part of the Gulf War for benefits purposes
VA website, page for benefits administration for gulf war veterans

Body of text as follow:

Gulf War Veterans

More than 650,000 Service members served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm from August 2, 1990 to July 31, 1991. For VA benefits eligibility purposes, the Gulf War period is still in effect. This means that anyone who served on active duty from August 2, 1990, to present is considered a Gulf War Veteran. For example, the Veterans Pension benefit requires service during a wartime period. Therefore, any Veteran who served on active military service for any period from August 2, 1990, to the present meets the wartime service requirement.

I was a little curious what the US government defined as "wars" for the purpose of benefits, and found this from the VA:
Under current law, we recognize these wartime periods to decide eligibility for pension benefits:

Mexican Border period (May 9, 1916, to April 5, 1917, for Veterans who served in Mexico, on its borders, or in adjacent waters)

    World War I (April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918)

World War II (December 7, 1941, to December 31, 1946)

    Korean conflict (June 27, 1950, to January 31, 1955)
Vietnam War era for Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam (November 1, 1955, to May 7, 1975)

Vietnam War era for Veterans who served outside the Republic of Vietnam (August 5, 1964, to May 7, 1975)

Gulf War (August 2, 1990, through a future date to be set by law or presidential proclamation)

Ah yeah I can see that causing confusion haha. I got kind of spoiled with the infrastructure in Perth, and then ending up in Newy was a bit of a shock to the system to see stuff like this. Not even a tiny strip of different paint, just a bike shape painted on the road in one of the lanes of traffic
Two lane road approaching a small hump in the road from a bridge. A white bicycle shape is painted in one of the lanes, beyond this a sign says to "watch out" for cyclists

Opposing bike lanes, but only because cyclists deserve better.
Traditional bike lane, a painted red stripe of tarmac between the road itself and a parking lane at the side of the road. The lane is completely unprotected and will be crossed by any car entering or leaving a parking space, along with drivers side doors unexpectedly partially opening into the lane when occupants exit. Completely separated shared use cycleway, to the left of a busy freeway. The freeway is separated by a concrete barrier, with an additional chain fence behind the barrier. There is an additional grass verge before the shared use path begins, with a 2 person wide lane marked in either direction. On the left of the cycleway is another verge area with bushes, shrubs, grass etc which opens up to the river the route runs alongside. Regularly spaced streetlights and placedyto illuminate the cycleway at night.
