Thank you, and yes, you're absolutely right: the whole system needs a shakeup. Someone earning £20k a year is almost certainly paying between 3% and 20% of their net worth a year in tax, just on £20k. Rishi Sunak paid a maximum of 0.096% of his net worth in tax in 2023. Pennies, by comparison.

I agree with everything you say, but I have to retain some hope, for my children. Whilst it's clear that the ultra wealthy are buying political power, to divide our society, and distract people from the real issues, we can't entirely excuse the voters who are seduced by the hateful rhetoric.

Yes, fair point, it does assume the 40% band moves in the same way. You're right (and my assumption was wrong) as you could cap the benefit of the tax change by not moving the 40% band. My concern remains that the price of making the change shouldn't be borne by those most in need.

To a degree, I don't mind what the mechanism is, but the 60% marginal tax rate is an issue. Personally I would favour a mechanism which caps the tax free allowance at 20% benefit, which wouldn't create the issue that tapering creates at the top end of the band.

In isolation this would disproportionately benefit high earners, who would get £1,200. It would be paid for by cutting benefits and services, disproportionately used by lower earners. It would only work if high earners benefit is capped, and it's paid for by taxing wealth.
