Another reasonable approach if you've started the command in question and it prints its listen address, is to parse its output. Epitomised by this upcoming testscript command: github.com/rogpeppe/go-...

Electric car emissions benefits are far greater than first thought Their results showed that the climate benefits were generally greatest when gasoline vehicles were retired at year one, resulting in a 58% reduction in carbon emissions over a 16-year period. www.futurity.org/carbon-emiss...

If you're not running in a noisy environment, the likelihood of port clashes is going to be rare even if you do. Maybe we need to normalize passing in a flag to enable SO_REUSEPORT. That's the cleanest general solution I've been able to think of.

Shame the "large port range" is less than 16 bits. Not much space to avoid the birthday paradox. *sigh*

Yes, this is a long-standing annoyance. Sadly it's often the only available approach (e.g. when starting a command that wants to do its own listening). If only we had a much larger port namespace! I sometimes wonder if one could (ab)use IPv6 localhost addresses for this, but I suspect not.

Too many highlights to mention, but building out the CUE module implementation and its central registry was a big one.

My take is that it's actually the user's prompt which is the real source and the specs themselves are (often) just such an artifact - often AI slop and not designed to be actually read.

a very effective presentation of androgen insensitivity (& indirectly, non-cell-autonomy, a core principle in development & evolution of multicellularity) in many situations, the cells in your body get external signals that tell them who they are & what they do, rather than knowing it internally

I'm left wondering what level of protocol this message is from. Error reporting is still a hard problem! Also, @anthropic.com please sort out Claude remote control, it's a joke currently.

This was a good watch: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFks... But this is talking about encoding 1 (probabilistic) bit of info: whether the text is watermarked or not. I wonder if it's feasible to use this technique to embed more bits, e.g. a user's name or location. Steganographic LLMs, anyone?

Ideally there'd be some abstraction that lets one provide a set of files in a generic way to any editor. Oh wait, there is! Sadly non-privileged mounting of virtual files never made it to the mainstream. RIP #plan9

It's a shame that editors are limited to showing on-disk files. Or that on-disk files tend to have a requirement to be physically copied there. Or something. Why do we still live in the 80s in some respects?

I've seen it's being more common to put historical articles (eg all previous designs and associated documents) directly into a repo's content rather than leaving it in git history. What should I be thinking about this in this new age?

Easier when you can easily propose a chain of independently CI'd/reviewed commits - no need to squash and the reviewer gets the benefit too. I'm spoiled by Gerrit!

I get it to make two commits/PRs for each fix: one to demonstrate the failure, the other to fix it. Works well and you don't have to take its assertion at face value.
