Holy moly, @ensembl.org killed biomart! Hope many R scripts are there out there that depend on biomaRt? How many people have informatics practicals, or undergraduate project instructions that depend on a web interface for bulk selection of data?

My grandma was born in a rural area, less than 100 inhabitants 😮 Now his grandson talks about lab recipes in the same school she learnt to read... Would she have ever imagined it? 🤯 Turning "science is so complicated" into "science is so interesting" felt amazing!

🚨 We discovered a new mode of Hox gene regulation in annelids! 🪱 A distal enhancer acts as a "global control region", lifting Hox genes from Polycomb repression. This is reminiscent of Hox gene control in vertebrates, but the two modes likely evolved convergently. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Capturing somatic mutations in single-cell probe-based assays (ie. 10X Flex) is a hard task, especially if you don't know *exactly* the mutations you want to capture, or if your target sequence is a mutational hotspot with many possible alternative alleles. Here's the way we pulled this off. Enjoy!

TIL the original paper describing CRISPR, by Francisco Mojica, was rejected by 4 journals and took 2 years to be published
CRISPR as a microbial immune system

In 2003, Mojica wrote the first paper suggesting that CRISPR was an innate microbial immune system. The paper was rejected by a series of high-profile journals, including Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Molecular Microbiology and Nucleic Acids Research, before finally being accepted by Journal of Molecular Evolution in February, 2005.[3][4]
