I feel sure there's a major difference between your post & Oakeshott's. Can't quite put my finger on it. I wonder what it could be.

He couldn't be a threat if there weren't thousands of people further down the pecking order willing (& often enthusiastic) to carry out his deranged instructions. Dictators can't function without people to dictate to.

In all the talk about prison capacity, no-one seems to be pointing out that we send more people to jail, for longer & in worse conditions than almost any other 1st world country . Maybe the issue is with demand rather than supply.

It's evident that many of these right-wingers' heads live in the USA. They assume that US cultural attitudes will apply here too, which very fortunately hasn't happened yet. Can't be complacent though - too many unpleasant aspects of US have already got a foothold here.

Burnham "told the BBC the current Brexit settlement had caused more harm than good" Still waiting for someone to explain what the "good" bit was. Also, whilst obviously the current agreement is a disaster, what other terms could have been beneficial in any way to UK (or EU)?

An election won with a manifesto commitment to rejoin would give the new govt potentially 5 years to consolidate that position & reduce (OK, not eliminate) the risk of a rw govt coming in within a couple of years & pulling us out again. That would be final - EU couldn't risk it happening again.
