There is now officially NO EXCUSE for America's decaying infrastructure--bridges, roads, levees, piers, dams, etc. We can build big and build fast. The neglect is deliberate.

Comparing frogs: a few weeks ago, there was a large hatch of tree frogs. Most likely here: Eastern Gray Treefrogs or Cope’s Gray Tree Frogs. They liked to gather around the porch lights, probably for the insects that were attracted, and much to the delight of the cats!

Hello! How are you holding up? What are you up to today? I had to do some storm cleanup first thing (we’re fine!), but it is shaping up to be a gorgeous afternoon. The scented geranium (pelargonium) Mexican Sage is looking pretty with its spangle of rain.

Good morning! How are you holding up? What are you up to today? This handsome tree frog (Pacific Chorus Frog) was basking on an Angelica leaf in the garden yesterday. I've started shuffling pots around to get them in position for winter. Today I may pot up some volunteer tree seedlings.
A tree frog with a green outer edge/belly/face and a tan back and legs sits crouched in a large leaf. It has distinct dark eye stripes and some spots and whooshes of dark on his back.

Trump thinks tariff money is his money. He thinks Air Force One is his plane. He defended his White House press ban by saying: "I don't have to let them into my– into the people's house." (He really meant "my.") They're stealing our country. Vote against all Republicans.

Colors in my yard especially vibrant this afternoon. Cleaning up the garden takes a long time. I’m only half done but there’s still time before the ground freezes. Still 20 feet of carrots to pull up. I’ve put away 4.5 gallons.

Donald Trump is not himself the disease of our politics. He’s just the worst symptom. The disease is the system that allows corporations to buy and sell politicians so they can rig it against the rest of us. Money out of politics. Money in your pocket. Medicare for All.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Now comes the hard part... wait. A small log may fruit after a year. A large log usually first fruits after two years, and sometimes sparsely at first... but be patient! These logs are about five years old now, and give us a couple big flushes in the fall and a couple big flushes in the spring. (/3)

How do you grow a Shiitake log? 1 - Fresh hardwood log (red alders are native here, and come down in storms regularly -- perfect for the purpose) 2 - Shiitake dowels: you can get these online. They are furniture dowels inoculated with mushroom of choice 3 - Drill/mallet. Make holes and hammer in! 2/

My Maximilian (I think) sunflowers have struggled a bit this year, but they're looking pretty good now and since they didn't grow nearly as tall as in previous years (easily 10 ft), they are not falling over, so far. Much respect to this plant.
Bright yellow Maximilian sunflowers from a dirty downstairs window. From a website: From an ecological standpoint, Maximilian Sunflower is extraordinarily valuable. Its late-season bloom provides critical nectar and pollen when most other flowers have finished, supporting large numbers of native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators before winter. The abundant seeds
nourish finches, sparrows, juncos, and many other seed-eating birds throughout fall and winter. The tall stems provide nesting structure and overwintering habitat for native bees and beneficial insects. And the dense rhizome system is exceptionally effective at stabilizing soil and suppressing
weeds — making it an excellent choice for erosion control and prairie restoration.Miner bee on a Maximilian sunflower
