S WI #FlowerReport: Last call for these "Happiness" morning glories. I am going to be cleaning up the garden area in the coming days. In the dark and cold of winter, I will be planning for next year's. I love the changing seasons: potential for dreaming and scheming. Best and kindest regards.

I lived in Oregon in the 90s & one night on radio a young woman was interviewing Joni Mitchell about an art exhibit she had at the time. During the interview she found out that Mitchell was also (!) a musician, and told her that was great, something to fall back on if the art didn’t pan out.

Timeline cleanse: I haven’t posted a pie in a while. Here’s a savory tomato pie homage, as we say farewell to our garden tomatoes in the Upper Midwest.

Stray cat sleeping on Japanese roof tiles. Photography by Takezoo on Ganref
Curled into a tight, peaceful crescent upon a sun-warmed copper roof ledge, a stray tabby cat reposes beneath the heavy eaves of a traditional Japanese structure. Above, rows of dark, undulating ceramic roof tiles (kawara) slope gently downward, dappled with vibrant golden and crimson autumn leaves (ochiba) drifted from overhead branches. Beneath the eaves, vermilion timber trim and clean white rafter ends cast soft shadows over the sleeping feline, whose soft grey coat merges harmoniously with the surrounding textures. The scene radiates an intimate sensory atmosphere: the gentle warmth of sun-soaked copper radiating through thick fur, the crisp rustle of falling leaves skittering across clay tiles, the faint, earthy fragrance of weathered wood and autumn air, and the deep, unbothered hush of a lazy afternoon.
Cats (neko) have occupied a cherished place in Japanese domestic life, folklore, and literature since the Nara period, when they were first brought aboard ships from China to guard sacred Buddhist sutras against rodents. Over centuries, these nimble creatures evolved into ubiquitous companions of urban streetscapes, quiet temple grounds, and classic ukiyo-e woodblock prints, embodying domestic tranquility, good fortune, and independence. The architectural backdrop illustrates traditional Japanese roofing design, where fired clay kawara tiles work in tandem with copper flashing (akagane) to shed seasonal rains and shield structural timbers. This enduring construction reflects monozukuri—the meticulous synthesis of natural materials, precision joinery, and functional metalwork engineered to withstand the elements while aging with dignity.

Here’s the thing. These tech bro types keep saying that AI is going to change everything. But what is it going to do about the fact that patients can’t pay for the tests that AI says we should get or the meds that AI says they should take?

AI doesn’t fix the fact that my patients don’t have a car that can make it far enough to get their colonoscopy. AI doesn’t fix that I have multiple adult patients who can’t read. AI doesn’t fix poverty or hold the check for a patient’s meds for a week until their paycheck gets deposited.

Feeling both relieved and sad that we’re entering the last 100-ish days of 2026. It’s been a hellacious year in so many ways, but it’s also surreal, in that it is the last year that my husband walked this earth. In late January, he will be gone a year. We’ve lost so many good people this year.

A turkey vulture perches high in a dead snag along St. Vrain Creek as the moon sets in Longmont, Colorado.

In this horizontal color photograph, a turkey vulture perches atop the forked branches of a dead snag, its head turned to the right as it surveys the landscape below. Positioned in the left side of the frame, the bird stands against a brilliant blue sky; a signature of Colorado's more than 300 days of sunshine each year. In the upper right corner, a Waning Gibbous Moon hangs above the horizon. This lunar phase follows the Full Moon, with the illuminated portion gradually decreasing each night.

This photograph is a focus stack created from two separate images. The first photograph was focused on the turkey vulture, while the second was focused on the moon. When using a super-telephoto lens, it is not physically possible to render both the nearby bird and the distant moon perfectly sharp in a single exposure because of the extremely shallow depth of field. By carefully combining the two images during post-processing, both subjects appear in sharp focus.

An incredible portrait of a turkey vulture perched along the riparian corridor of St. Vrain Creek with a setting Waning Gibbous Moon; a scene that highlights both the beauty of Colorado's natural landscapes and the habitat so vital to this remarkable scavenger.
