Keep thinking about something I read yesterday: that when Leyland launched the Princess “saloon” in the mid-1970s, its base engine was a design that dated from 1948 😶

Deep into the Sixties by David Kynaston (Review—Part 1)
Note: As is traditional with these reviews (see here and here and here), I’ll split my thoughts into three parts, of which this is the first. I’m actually due to go to the London Library next week to listen to the author in person (talking to Samira Ahmed), but these are my initial thoughts about ⅓ of the way through the latest volume in David Kynaston’s epic…

Just had a listen to the remixed Rubber Soul, and I wasn't going to say anything, but then I went for a walk. If you'd asked me a couple of weeks ago, I'd have trotted out my usual line, which is that I think I prefer Rubber Soul to Revolver. Then again, I've also said I don't think I'd put it in my top 5.

“A little subdued” Kynaston p154
‘Friday was Beatles day: in the nation's record shops, the appearance of Rubber Soul ('a little subdued' for the taste of Melody Maker's Pop Panel); and in Glasgow, the start of the group's only UK tour this year (' no riots', reported NME, but still 'two jam-packed houses, some fainting fits, and thunderous waves of screams that set the city's Odeon theatre trembling'). Sadly for George, as they had travelled north that morning in their Austin Princess, a bumpy stretch of road had resulted in his much-loved Gretsch guitar falling out of the boot and into the path of oncoming traffic. 'About 13 lorries went over it before our chauffeur could get near it, he told a music journalist. "Then one of the lorries stopped and the driver came up with the dangling remains of it and said: "Oy, is this 'ere banjo anyfink to do wiv you?"’

I downloaded this because it was recommended by Emily St. John Mandell in an interview promoting her latest novel Exit Party (which I have not yet downloaded). The tenor of her recommendation was that it was little-known but deserved a wider readership. Fair enough, I thought, on many counts. I could not recall ever having heard of Dan Chaon. Gearbox saga – an ending
The parking situation at the VW dealer in MK (artist's impression) Today, finally, the long saga of the EMERGENCY GEARBOX MODE was brough to a close. We had the actual problem fixed* in France over the summer, but on returning home and trying to use the other car key, we discovered that it had become "unpaired" from the car because an essential electronic component had been swapped out.

Lol, classic. “The head of the firm is dead at present” – a line worthy of Peter Cook
From Kynaston: “and at a party that evening at the American Embassy, Tony Benn encountered Groucho Marx. I like England and its people but this quaintness has gone too far and has got to be stopped,' he told the Postmaster General. 'I ordered a suit and it was four weeks before the first fitting. I asked about another firm of tailors who had made a suit years ago and they said, "It's still going but the head of the firm is dead at present"? This is how the world looks at us, reflected Benn afterwards”

Words the Weather Gave Us by Grace Tierney (ARC review)
In one of his books (can’t remember which one) French polymath philosopher Michel Serres makes a big deal of the fact that in French, the same word – temps – means both weather and time. He makes the point, in his gnomish way, that since weather is a chaotic system, then time is too. Time is not a straight line, but fractal and folded.
