It covers everything from the Orphics to the Neoplatonists, and from Eleusis to the PGM. It is the book that I would have wanted to read as a student. /3

This is the only book currently available on the market that provides a solid general introduction to ancient Greek esotericism - it is academically credible but assumes no prior knowledge from the reader. /2

I do wonder, though, how far belief was ever really the point (outside devout and clerical circles). Christianity in its different forms often functions as an orthopractic ethnic religion. In some manifestations it's not unlike Judaism or Shinto.

On Lefebvre: "I remember Archbishop Lefèbvre with respect and affection – as a much misunderstood and much maligned man. Just because I can no longer believe what he did, that does not stop me still admiring the man I knew personally."

The seminary routine: "One of my professors was an ex-British Army officer, and he once remarked to me: 'Many of my men would not last a week here!' It was indeed run like a military academy."

Love in the seminary: "my dark-haired young man had been refused the tonsure, as they had doubts about his suitability. From then on we spent more and more time together.... I fell head over heels in love with him. We even managed to spend several nights together locked in loving embraces!"

On a retreat: "the priest got me to confess to “sodomy” and reduced me to a tearful nervous wreck.... It wasn’t until decades later that I realized what the stupid bastard... had done. I... thought it was an archaic term for a male kissing and cuddling another male and, yes, having a mutual wank"

After 9/11, various people in the West went in search of the ideology which had inspired the attacks and attempted to trace it to its sources. Here are some old notes on Islamism which I'm republishing from my old blog: pagesfromahistoriansnotebook.substack.com/p/some-notes...

The Beatles had this magickal quality - the Stones didn't. Taylor Swift has it - Charli XCX doesn't. Michael Jackson had it - Stevie Wonder didn't. David Bowie had it - Bob Dylan didn't. 2/2

Paul McCartney once described the Beatles as having the quality of magick, with a k. There are some acts who are like this and some who just aren't, no matter how talented and original they are. 1/2

I think the belief is that it's ok to venerate the spirit of the earth on the understanding that she exists under the sovereignty of the Holy Trinity. On that basis, this sort of thing is unorthodox but not idolatrous.

The prevalent 1987-1992, 2011, 1848 or 1789 perspective of regimes falling through some grand and sudden revolt in the big cities often doesn't accurately reflect how the power of an authoritarian regime bleeds out often for years and decades before that in countrysides that journalists rarely visit

Modern western religious culture is sometimes referred to as a "spiritual supermarket": buyers are presented with a bewildering array of choices in an environment in which the consumer is king. This model of religious plurality can be traced back to Victorian times. 1/
