Content addressing and governance — I mean, try to name a more iconic duo.

But I don't want a theme, I just want a browser with windows and widgets that are discreet, OS-style.

Yes, I glossed over these. I think there are options (e.g. there's money flowing through the system — collect a small tax to manage the overall ecosystem and maybe pay for DRM from that). Make a coop of rights & clients (of sufficient volume both sides) and have them sort it out.

Haha yeah :) But indeed, I think they'd benefit — I mean, compared to Spotify? It's gotta be better.

OMG I just routinely update Firefox and all of a sudden everything looks like someone vomited stale salmon on my screen. What the actual fuck. All the corners rounded and transparent gradients for scrollable overflow. Is 2013 back in style? I've so had it with these fuckers.

There are product categories in which finding a good European version can be tricky. But a replacement for Teams really, *really* isn't one. It's hard to read this as anything other than @politico.eu pushing the Springer-Thiel MAGA line. www.politico.eu/article/eu-m...

This ought to create buying power and market dynamics that make things with better for everyone except intermediaries. Yes, you've recognised AT and Beckn under the hood.

Different kinds of deals can exist. Maybe your client promotes a bundle and gets better prices. Another can have a subscription system that averages over all users. Sometimes you might have to subscribe to a rightsholder. But that is all managed by a client that works for you.

Great question. This is true also of music streaming services. Here's one design. Each rightsholder publishes the work on their own server. This gets indexed so that we have a global database of it all. People use a client of their choosing that can negotiate payments, and find & play content.

The funniest thing is that the injunction is for democracy people to be less naive and literally your first reaction is to be as naive as possible. KUTGW!

A follow-up Web Tiles Wishes demo! Two tiles, each on its own PDS, share one rotating die. Either tile can wish for control of the die, and the other can grant it. Their messages cross an external relay server on the internet, and a live panel shows each message as it passes.

Wishes, Continued: Shared View Between Two Web Tiles Via External Relay
Two independently published Web Tiles share a single rotating die, passing control back and forth with a wish and a grant, through a real relay on the internet.

People who don't fit those criteria can be there without keeping the space from succeeding — but then they get Poster's Madness. Do not recommend.

Hugely excited that this now sees the light of day. Aster will not only serve science and scientists, it will help deliver #trust signals to online communities.

At any rate, I really look forward to seeing what the @aster.id team builds, researchers join Aster, the many collaborations in the ecosystem, and many new research tools (as we're already starting to see).

It sounds like a walk-into-a-bar joke but it's a historical fact. Everything else — journalists, politicians, tedious centrist bloviators — all come downstream of that culture-making. And so creating good spaces for researchers (some of whom went from X to *shudder* LinkedIn) helps here too.

Helping research is very cool — but in return it helps microblogging. If you know the internet, you know that successful spaces are made by 1) shitposters, 2) the weirder artists, 3) the community around horny/trans/furry Rust/Elixir developers, and 4) intense scholars of various fields.

The social internet is an internet in which people are first-class citizens: it adds identity, owning your data, collaboration, and universal data publishing. It's not just that it can do more than microblogging — it's a great match for research (amongst others). It could really accelerate things.

The Atmosphere is showing signs that we have a path to transforming that world. If you haven't noticed that AT is about much, much more than microblogging, please look again. I mean, just look at this ATScience ecosystem map! And this is barely the beginning: mu.social/profile/atpr...

So much of research happens on proprietary tools and — this might be a familiar story — those tools are monopolistic, overpriced, and for the most part really, really shit. Like Facebook redesigned Teams and gave it to the Google Search team levels of shit. This has been very hard to break.

The social internet — for science! I'm super excited to see @aster.id launching. It's an Atmosphere service provider (like @eurosky.social) for researchers, hosted by your friends at the @modalfoundation.eurosky.social. Why does it matter? Thread time! 🧵

How can Europe build digital infrastructure that is both resilient and sovereign, without closing itself off from the world? Great to have @robin.berjon.com joining us at #Trefdag26 to explore that question, and how interoperability and open ecosystems can strengthen Europe’s digital resilience.

Are Linux and Open Source Un-American?
Community
by Steve Coe
on February 21, 2001

Jim Allchin, Microsoft Windows operating system chief, was quoted in an article about open source last week. I advise any Linux user to go and read it if you haven't already, as it's great comedy material.

According to the hive mind of Microsoft, open source should be made illegal. There's no way around it, this is the bottom line. Want to write your own code and release it into the community? Congratulations, come with us Sir/Madam, we have this nice little grey room for you. Don't worry about the bars on the windows, they are there for our protection in case you somehow manage to write a graphics viewer or a Perl script to terrorize the world.

Ordinarily, a mere underling like Mr. Allchin wouldn't be taken too seriously, but Microsoft speaks with one voice, and we all know who he is channeling.

As a member of the Linux and Open Source communities, I am appalled and outraged by his comments and wish to respond. The article shows Microsoft is scared. Very scared. So, will they build a better product? Nah, to hell with it, they'll just get the government to outlaw the competition.
