Just found a nice quotation from Brig. Gen. Robert Anstruther dated 14 Oct 1808. ‘Pray let Wellesely be sent back – let him be our Achilles, whoever is our Agamemnon. It is impossible to conceive any thing more perfect than the confidence of the Troops in him.’ @rorymuir.bsky.social

An interesting fact that’s come to light researching Moore’s 1808 campaign in Spain is that handwritten British sources use Coruña, but printed versions of the letters use Corunna, because the English typefaces didn’t contain the ñ character, meaning the battle is now always known as Corunna.

Papers relating to the repatriation of Spanish POWs in July 1808. Along with the muskets, swords, accoutrements & cartridges going with them to Corunna were ‘hats of cheese’ weighing 120,000lb. I assume a hat was like a wheel but taller than wide. Anyone come across the term before? #cheese #history

Received my royalties statement today and have had to buy a new washing machine. The two amounts are almost exactly equal. Easy come, easy go.

Researching the Corunna campaign. Returned to my fave source used for my Vimeiro book: Brig Gen Anstruther's journal. Great stuff, but often impossible to read. Can anyone decipher the underlined word? Rest of sentence in thread.

I really enjoyed Bluestockings by Susannah Gibson. A really well written and researched book shedding much needed light on a neglected subject. The chapter on motherhood and child birth is a harrowing read though.

Reading the diary of the Adjutant of 15th Hussars. 8 Jan 1808. ‘Major Forrester, Captains Seelinger and Gordon reported unfit for duty, also Asst. Surgeon Forbes and Cornet Phillips. Sick indeed, the wonder is how they find time to be sick.’ The retreat to Corunna was obviously not going well.

I've finished the Corunna section of the original German edition of Commissary Auguste Schaumann's memoirs. The English translator had omitted a few useful bits, mostly only descriptions of towns or landscapes. Schaumann's paintings of the campaign, though poorly printed, were an interesting bonus.
