The trouble is finding both something commercial and that we can find someone to write the text for. Happy to discuss more when I’m back from holiday.

Just found a nice quotation from Brig. Gen. Robert Anstruther dated 14 Oct 1808. ‘Pray let Wellesely be sent back – let him be our Achilles, whoever is our Agamemnon. It is impossible to conceive any thing more perfect than the confidence of the Troops in him.’ @rorymuir.bsky.social

An interesting fact that’s come to light researching Moore’s 1808 campaign in Spain is that handwritten British sources use Coruña, but printed versions of the letters use Corunna, because the English typefaces didn’t contain the ñ character, meaning the battle is now always known as Corunna.

Had a few such emails, but the chances of any club being that interested in the Napoleonic British Army is so remote that I don’t even bother reading them.

What’s odd is that the cheese was the only foodstuff mentioned in the letters between Doyle and Castlereagh. Doyle did deviate considerably from his orders and seems a bit of a rogue, so I wouldn’t put it past him to make a quick buck.

A cheese update: it went off in the heat of the Spanish summer and what remained had to be sold at auction as it wouldn’t have survived the journey inland to the Spanish troops.

I should probably clarify that it was 120,000lb of cheese in total. Not per hat. That’s still a lot of cheese.

Papers relating to the repatriation of Spanish POWs in July 1808. Along with the muskets, swords, accoutrements & cartridges going with them to Corunna were ‘hats of cheese’ weighing 120,000lb. I assume a hat was like a wheel but taller than wide. Anyone come across the term before? #cheese #history

Of course if I added up the costs of books, research trips etc it would probably come to several appliances.

Similar story here, but I fear that in the UK a combination of increasing student debt and poor job opportunities will mean fewer will both going to uni in the future.

The former complained bitterly of Sir J.M’s conduct to Lord C having said to him that he thought himself unworthily and [unreadable] treated by ministers; would not hear of his having the command.

Robert had a brother called Henry and it was actually him that should have been named as Robert died in Spain during the Corunna campaign. The brothers came from Ireland, where my ancestors were at the time, but apparently their actual name was Griffin. Both served in the light company.
