In the 1740s, a young elm tree at South Baddesley, was heard emitting agonised groans. Visitors, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, came to listen to the Hampshire Groaning Tree until the sounds ceased when a hole was drilled in the trunk to investigate the cause. #EYAFolklore

“All’s well that ends well” – Gerhard Kaufmann, during internment on the Isle of Man, in letters to his parents, Fritz and Elizabeth Kaufmann. Over the summer, I was fortunate to work on a project creating enhanced catalogue descriptions for part of the collection of Gerhard Kaufmann (born 27th July 1900, in Mannheim), a German Jewish refugee interned on the Isle of Man from late-June or early-July 1940 to 4th June 1941, who would later go on to work as a translator at the Nuremberg Trials.

Earth, Sea and Sky: the new Special Collections exhibition
As the British Science Festival returns to Southampton in September 2026, we take this opportunity to explore material within the Archives and Special Collections that relates to science and the themes of Earth, Sea and Sky in the new Special Collections exhibition. We hear much about the work of "citizen scientists" whose important work recording information underpins other scientific discoveries. Under the theme of “Earth”, the work of a number of individuals are featured, from Emma Delmé Radcliffe who collected samples of plants and flowers around Shawford in Hampshire in July 1838, which were later arranged meticulously into eight volumes of herbarium, to Revd Gilbert White, the renowned naturalist who is said to have inspired Charles Darwin, and the geologist Thomas Webster.
