Hardening the subway is fine and I expect fare gates rather than turnstiles to eventually be adopted, but even then that doesn’t solve the underlying issue of needing to address the challenges people face. Even if there isn’t crime, I just think it’s wrong to leave people on the street without help.

This is not just a subway issue. Yesterday I saw someone peeing into a grate in the middle of 42nd Street in Times Square. Broad daylight. There were several occasions in Manhattan over the last few days where there were randos shouting. Every subway train I was on this week had visible police.

I know so much of this is about an underfunded safety net, lack of beds, lack of supportive housing. But we have to solve this, because we aren't doing the emotionally disturbed person or the wider society any favors by just letting these folks walk around on the streets untreated.

🧵 I don’t think I’ve ever come across documents that told a story about cops covering their tracks so clearly before. The text messages below tell the story better than any exposition. They sent most of these messages less than a day after they’d killed a man in a mental health crisis with AR-15s.

I don’t think it’s an outlier and I don’t think the chances she loses are that low. It was always going to be a very close race. Braun is stronger than Kent. MGP has alienated many of her voters. But a blue wave might make up for it. We will see, but it will be close either way.

It's interesting that budget chair Strauss doesn't think providing food is a "charter responsibility." I wonder how recently he's read the charter. Politicians love to say "public safety is our number 1 charter responsibility," but actually the charter lists "health" first, followed by "safety."

Somehow not everyone is aware of fact alluded to below. So one more time: John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett were all on GWBush 2000 'Florida Recount' team. (Which made GWB first prez in 112 yrs to 'win' after losing popular vote. Now they 'impartially' rule on our future.)

We need automated traffic enforcement desperately in California given that our police departments refuse to enforce the law and when they do, cannot refrain from being violent. But there are thousands of problematic drivers on our roads and we need to ID them in order to suspend their licenses.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again - treating shade/shadow as a negative impact that needs to be limited or mitigated is a relic from the days when Boomers thought that rubbing on baby oil and laying out in direct sun was a healthy thing to do.

Yep. I think she is toast. It’ll be a narrow loss but I don’t see her holding on, between her having alienated her voters and Braun being a better GOP candidate than Kent.

Almost doing the right thing and then not doing it just makes it worse. Biden had plenty of opportunities to change course and his failure to do so was catastrophic for the entire planet.

My brother used to have a neighbor who constantly bitched about Black people and talked about how they all need to get shipped back to Africa. JD Vance is giving that vibe, except, with a cheering crowd of mostly white faces behind him. We need to recognize this for what it is.

When you read between the lines of this piece from the Seattle Times' "save print newspapers ONLY" columnist, it becomes glaringly obvious that he opposes changes to the proposed newspaper preservation law because it would open opportunities for small, non-legacy digital outlets.

Seattle voters don't want "tough" on crime policies or politicians. They want leaders to be "responsive" on crime -- to show up with a range of solutions that demonstrate urgency, seriousness, and effectiveness. This is why Nilu Jenks is winning District 5. She gets this. Julie Kang just panders.

What I think people need to take from JD is that he and others see the future of the party as a viciously, overtly racist Christian nationalist party and they are laying the groundwork to be successful in that future while Democratic consultants are stuck in the 90s.

And maybe they will! But I am less confident, the anger is *deep*. And rather than address it or try and shore up those voters, MGP insists on pissing them off even further, voting with the House GOP last month on key procedural items.
120
Robert Cruickshank @robertcruickshank.com · 12h
All true, but there are also a lot of voters in Clark County in particular, though elsewhere in the district too, who are very deeply angry at MGP over her actions, especially on the SAVE Act. She and HMP basically have to hope that those voters will get over it and cast a ballot for her anyway.

Robert Cruickshank @robertcruickshank.com · 13h
The idea that only she alone can win that district is and always was wrong. She was correct in 2022 that her approach was better than the usual DCCC approach they'd tried and failed for 12 years. But others can run as a credible outsider -- who this time won't sell them out to MAGA.
060
Robert Cruickshank @robertcruickshank.com · 13h
My guess is that's probably what happens. But it's possible the liberal Vancouver voter who is (rightly) mad at her thinks "well, it looks like Dems are taking the House anyway, MGP can do this without me" and leave that race blank on the ballot. We shall see!

Robert Cruickshank @robertcruickshank.com · 13h
It's really sad. I was so excited for her to win, I knew there would be the occasional bad vote, but what we've gotten is just totally unacceptable. I hope she beats Braun but that's all I'll do for her, hope.

I've known her since 2016, was one of the first people she called when she was seriously considering running for Congress in early 2022, I donated and connected her to endorsers and donors. By the end of 2023 I unsubscribed from her email list and told her fundraiser to not bother asking me for $$.

You'd have thought MGP would try and shore up her base. Instead she spent September voting with the GOP against her own caucus. Madness.

Robert Cruickshank @robertcruickshank.com · 13h
John Braun is a much tougher opponent than Joe Kent ever was. Braun is a reliable MAGA vote but comes off (and often is) more reasonable and decent than Kent. Whereas MGP has alienated some of her base - the liberal Vancouver resident who hates MAGA. A Braun win would not surprise me.
4101
Robert Cruickshank @robertcruickshank.com · 13h
I very much think she wants to win. But she is losing her two BFFs - Golden is leaving Congress, and Peltola is moving up to Senate. In a larger caucus she loses her relevance.

Robert Cruickshank @robertcruickshank.com · 13h
Yeah I'm not 100% sold on DHM Research, I need to see more of a track record. But a 1 point Braun lead would not surprise me. I'm sure we'll see more polling of WA-3 soon enough.

Robert Cruickshank @robertcruickshank.com · 13h
Indeed! She’s alienated her base, and John Braun is a much harder opponent than Joe Kent.

…you’re absolutely right that this is a crucial concern a lot of people have, that they won’t be able to pick their doctor any more, that they will be stuck with lower quality care, that the new system will make them miserable. And so that does have to be addressed directly.

That’s what an NHS model would look like. Medicare currently works as a reimbursement model so people can still choose to see a doctor on their own, they’re not part of a managed system like Kaiser (or the old Group Health up here in WA). So Medicare for All wouldn’t necessarily be like Kaiser. But…
