nobody loves shitty ROI more than a city spending millions to stop thousands in fare evasion. (if they actually wanted it to stop, they’d eliminate fares and make public transit be for the public!)

I can’t wait to read the NYT op-ed from Renee Good’s wife about grief on the one year anniversary of her death. Surely the NYT will extend the same grace to Becca Good—whose partner died protesting against state power—as it has to Erica Kirk—whose partner died defending white supremacy

The novelty of invoking the butterfly effect when considering impacts on future generations is intriguing, but if he's counting existence as a net benefit to people born after depletion, thereby annulling the harm of scarcity, then shouldn't he should count non-existence as harm to those not born?

In my version, the idea is that a wise man can be too smart for his own good, whereas a fool at least knows what he's seeing. It fits the theme of the song (and scans better). The correct version suggests that dummies should listen to smart people. I like my mis-heard version.

For decades, I was off by one word for the chorus to "What a Fool Believes." I thought it was "What a fool believes he sees, the wise man has the power to reason away." I recently learned it's actually "NO wise man has the power to reason away."

Last month, he posted a vacuous feel-good reel about how AI is great for people. The background music was David Bowie's "Five Years," a song about the extinction of humanity. I guess that gets filed under 'annoyingly out-of-touch.' www.facebook.com/share/v/1HY4...

I learned nothing about AI from this viewing experience. In fact, it left me *more* concerned about AI, not less. And that was before I realized that the background music was David Bowie's "Five Years," a song about the end of the world and the extinction of humanity.

I would love to see sequential *national* primaries, at say two-week intervals. Knock out the lowest vote-getters each time. It'd work similarly to the current system, except every qualified voter can vote in each round if they want, rather than have to wait until their state finally comes up.

Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.

The earliest known recording of Carol of the Bells was made in 1922, although it wasn't known by that name yet. It was an arrangement of a Ukrainian folk song called "Shchedryk," sung by a visiting Ukrainian chorale in New York City: (1/4) www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXZL...

For scientists, "disagree with it" means disagree with how a study was done, how the data was derived and used, etc. For Vance, "disagree with it" just means "don't like the results." Scientists should critique the practice of science, sure. Vance should just sit down and listen.

This is why oral debates aren't the best way learn about an issue. *Written* debates, in which each side has the time to research their claims and counterarguments, are more informative. (Albeit generally duller.)

Kinda wish it had been made clear that on the silver screen, it's not the cigarettes that make the actor look cool. It's the director, the lighting, and the soundtrack. "Looking good when smoking" is a directorial choice, not something that teenagers will actually experience when smoking.
