Some progress on texturing Y-wing engine #2. Both will still need a bit more work, but it's going well.
A 3D render of 2 Y-wing engine 3D models, arranged one above the other, on a black background. They have a realistic appearance, with subtle weathering, that could fool someone into thinking they were physical models instead of CGI.

Some funky hydrothermally active terrain from mashing around a few procedural noises and color ramps in Blender. Also was a test for when I do those 90s-style remakes of a bit of that StarCraft cinematic. I will iterate more to go for that look. Also inspired by the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia
A funky 3D render of some procedurally generated terrain with rocky formations and odd yellow waterlines around green deep water. A bit reminiscent of old Bryce 3D renders with noise-displaced terrain, just a more advanced version of that. There's also a cheesy 90s lens flare filter on top.

I see your ghoulish Orodromeus-hunting Troödon and raise you another... (by Mitsuhiro Kurokawa, in Dinosaur Valley / Kyoryu No Tani [1991])
A painting of a trio of Troodon hunting for Orodromeus at night in some waist-high greenery. Their eyes glow red in the dark. The scene and colors are very artistically pleasing, but the anatomy is very questionable and rounded, with the eye placement in relation to the skull feeling almost amphibian.

Shuffling around the greebles for the other side's engine so that they're unique, like the originals. (here the 2nd engine is shown mirrored so it's a more direct comparison)
An untextured viewport screenshot of 2 Y-wing engines, that are extremely similar to each other, but have a bunch of differently-placed details instead of being exact duplicates.

Not super different, but they do have unique weathering and slightly different greeble arrangements, since they couldn't just 'mirror' it all. Here is an example from the ANH Gold 2 model, where both sides the same panel with a 中 shape in it, but it's on the front on one and the back on the other.

Great stuff- reminds me of an analog equivalent used in Aliens (1986), where the infested ceiling was a foreground miniature, yet seemed to have flashlights from the bg pass over its surface to sell the effect. Must've just been someone just out of frame with a pen light roughly matching the actors.
An image from the movie Aliens (1986) in which a group of people appear to be in an expansive industrial room where the hallway and ceiling are overgrown with some sort of biological hardened Gigeresque covering, with a line drawn on to show where in actuality the set ended and a miniature ceiling takes over. In the movie scene, as the actors shine lights around, their lights appear to be cast on the miniature ceiling as well, selling the illusion that it is a real, full-size ceiling, but in fact it must have been someone with a pen light in the foreground passing the light over roughly in sync with the actors in the distance.A behind the scenes set photo showing that the alien infestation ends about 12 feet up, and there is no big infested ceiling with industrial pipes.

A good fresh Star Trek take on those fake isekai title jokes
A tumblr screenshot showing a post and two reblog responses, reading:

A while back I made this low poly Geonosian Starfighter model from Star Wars Episode II. I didn't really end up using it for anything, but it was fun to make. I like the idea of very different species/cultures having very different shipbuilding aesthetics/approaches in Star Wars.
A rear/side angled view of a Geonosian Starfighter in space. It is a small ship with 2 smooth brown catamaran-like hulls, but stacked on top of each other vertically instead of being side by side. In between the two hulls are an engine in a ball mount at the rear, and a laser gun in a ball mount in the middle. At the top is a cockpit bubble with a Geonosian pilot inside.A side/front angled view of a Geonosian Starfighter in space. At some point I made this nearly-exhaustive chart/classification of Zergling designs. I could find a way to format it better, add more concept art, add some of the stuff that's been released since I made it... but also I might be the only person who cares. Still fun to see the different body plans!
A chart comparing 23 different official pieces of Zergling artwork, including concept art and 3D models, spanning about 20 years. I have loosely grouped them into 5 different categories based on body type, which also generally but not entirely correspond to chronology, as during the first game's development there were several different competing designs from different artists. There are some designs that straddle the categories a bit but I don't indicate that here.

A lot of people who don't look at game manuals didn't notice the hands, a misconception aided by that design not appearing in the game's cinematics, and sequel games putting the blades on the upper set of arms. So a lot of people were surprised when SC Remastered came out and kept them.
A screenshot of the zergling model used in the SC1 and Brood War cinematics, which reuses a lot of hydralisk parts and only has 4 limbs, with no upper set of hands.

Back in 2000, there was a StarCraft edition of the ttrpg Alternity, which had some illustrations of mixed quality/accuracy. Their version of the zergling was pretty great though- at the time there was no high-detail public art of what this version was supposed to look like, and this is a good take.
The Zergling illustration from Alternity: StarCraft Edition (2000). It faithfully/correctly has a bunch of the key features from the in-game sprite version, such as a tail with sideways-facing spikes, big webbed hind feet, forelimbs with scythelike claw blades, some sort of hydralisk-like carapace over its back, an extra pair of upper arms with clawed hands, and a slightly dinosaurlike head with two extra mandibles with curved bladed claws on them. There are some new artistic liberties like giving it a small spiky tongue and baraka-like teeth, but nothing that goes against the ethos of StarCraft 1 Zerg. It looks a little more like a vertebrate and not very insectoid, but still has some segmented-looking exoskeletal armor. Pretty good!A screenshot of the low res sprite zergling design for the gameA render of the 3D model used to create the sprites, as printed in black and white in the game's manual. A lot of the body plan is visible but details are indistinct or stretched, like there isn't really much of a recognizable face or neck, because this model was not meant to be seen up close.

Ah I forget who it was, but someone on here had a thread a couple years ago of artwork that had a single subject looking back at the camera/viewer like that, always so much fun. :D
A flipped and cropped portion of Tissot's "The Artists' Wives" (1885), a painting depicting an outdoor gathering of well-dressed people seated at tables with white tablecloths somewhere in Paris as waitstaff are about to start serving- and a single woman in the lower left of this edit looks back at the 'camera.'The painted box art for Doom (1993) by Don Ivan Punchatz, depicting space-suited men in a red craggy landscape being assailed by a horde of red, horned demons. You can see a similar kind of relation between the toe claws and toe bones on the feet of the actual original cinematic model, where they're like a cross between bones and insect limb segments, rather than being like dinosaur talons.
A screenshot showing a closeup portion of a dead Zergling from a StarCraft 1 cinematic, tangled limbs and a bit of the body. It is mostly shiny brown and exoskeletal/arthropodal looking, rather than fleshy or dinosaurian.A closeup crop of just the segmented toes and claws from the previous picture.

Robert Rose @robear.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Almost thought I had the new toe in correctly, but realized I accidentally made it look like a regular vertebrate claw, where the base is sheathed in flesh. But on the StarCraft 1 Zerg, everything is like bony exoskeletal segments, so it should really be like pic 2. Subtle but important difference!
A Blender viewport screenshot looking at the feet and tail of a WIP StarCraft Zergling sculpt. Parts of the sculpt still look smooth and undetailed, but it has a new dewclaw-toe that is pretty refined- but the claw on the is rooted/socketed inside the toe flesh, making it not look insectoid/skeletal like it should.A closeup of a revised version of the rear dewclaw toe where the base of the claw / nail is as wide as the joint behind it, instead of being socketed.

More progress on the refinement of the old Zergling model. The ankle area will be getting a much bigger change than the rest, because as I had posted before (bsky.app/profile/robe...) at the time of making the original in 2020 I misinterpreted that part of the reference I had available at the time.

(And of course having the external ribcage detail links it stylistically to the Hydralisk, good to have them feel a bit connected) (And the Zergling concept art that has that rib detail wears its Alien Giger influence on its sleeve)

Little more ongoing refinement... the external ribs detail was in some of the old concept art and in the SC:Ghost version, so I did add it in there, my 2020 sculpt just didn't have the definition to show it super well. Now it will be clearer! All still WIP.

There was a single, solitary render of this model with its textures in the game's manual, that I studied for many years, but having that new second angle in 2018 was big for my understanding of it. Because of the angle I never noticed that 4th non-webbed toe, and just thought it was part of the leg!
The black-and-white render of the Zergling sprite model from the StarCraft 1 manual, showing its arrangement of limbs clearly, but with the exact shapes of the legs still a little ambiguous.A cropped closeup of the feet and lower legs, color-coded to reveal that there was a 4th toe there all along, mostly hidden behind the legs.

In 2018 they showed the original wireframe in a GDC slide, but I didn't know about it at the time. I don't need to follow it exactly, some stuff from these like the width of the side spikes was surely exaggerated to show up in the tiny sprite. But other things I should revise/add, like the 4th toe.
A low res image of a wireframe for the original sprite Zergling design from StarCraft. It is made of a bunch of different elements of varying levels of details chunked together, some very finely-shaped like the head and carapace, others like the tail spikes very blocky.
Also I am like 95% sure the head and back carapace of this is the same exact model/object as the sprite hydralisk's head.

Robert Rose @robear.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
A bit more Zergling refining, just chip away a little bit at a time and it'll get done. (A lot of this is also trying to balance the kinds of design elements they would have had in mind in the 90s, not doing my own ideal look. Like I don't like the tail-end spike-blade, but I think it was there).

Little test showing the mechanism. The part where the tiny cylinder at the back attaches to the big cylinder is a separate element that slides along the big cylinder, so there is no stretching or cheating. Also the parts that move up internally don't clip into the pilot/cockpit area, it does all fit

WIP for the front landing gear foot thing for my Y-wing model. Still have to do some of the retracting stuff and model an inside to the bay, but it does all retract and fit. This is eyeballed and not exaaactly 1000% accurate to the ANH one, I will do some revisions, but it's very reasonable.

In the original Star Wars, I think the Y-wing's rear landing pad/foot is the same foot piece as the one up in the front. In different shots in the movie it appears to be rotated 180°, so I guess if you are doing your own you can just pick your preferred angle. 😅

Maybe an artist referencing the head of that Knight one and the pose of this 1938 Burian one, at least a bit... But that doesn't really narrow it down.

Not everything on there is 1000% right and I would do a couple things differently now. I preferred it to some of the new features added in the SC:Remastered version, but that one also has the body layout right and is also very good. Here are some images of that one if you want to compare.

Did that my 9 animes thing but my picks are mostly very basic because I am a filthy casual. I'd also like to put like the first half of Frieren on here, it dropped off a bit for me after. And I'm looking forward to S2 of Delicious in Dungeon maybe continuing to elevate itself into this list.
A list of 9 anime from a website trend that's going around. It's supposed to be captioned "9 anime that shaped who I am," but for the most part I wasn't a huge anime-watcher in my early formative years, so I amended it to "9 anime that didn't really shape who I am because I'm a filthy casual, but did stand out to me." The list, in no particular order is, Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun, Princess Mononoke, Death Note, Journal with Witch, Pokémon, Spirited Away, SPY x FAMILY, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Your Name.

It'll be a bit more awkward to recreate this shot with the 90s look, with a lot of closeup time on the detailed end of the new gauss rifle... my model (right) is very much just meant to be a recreation of the 90s model's shapes, and there's not much there. Also if you're wondering why I gave it a trunk, I also never used to picture them with one, but the SC:Ghost design from a few years later had one (and so did SCRemastered). In retrospect I think they were going for a Space Jockey look, I think it'd be better if the end looped back up to the chest.

For this guy I polished up the head area portion of it for use as an SC2 portrait for a mod. It's a lot better/more accurate than the head on my older lowpoly full-body version, so I'll have to cut out the better head and paste it on the body at some point. The body is still decent.

With the reveal of that new StarCraft marine design, I'd also like to look back on an overlooked design you might not have seen- the updated easter egg unit made for Warcraft 3 Reforged. The outline of the design is based on the SC remaster, but it has a lot of new detail and character. By Si Seow.

I saw a photo showing a bit more of the chest area and it's very new! I /think/ it's going to be a design where it looks like an external ribcage, xenomorph-style, but actually it's little pairs of mini-arms, that just can fold up flat to look like 'ribs.' Maybe something like this crappy sketch:
A closeup photo of the 3d printed statue of the new upcoming designs of the Marine and Hydralisk fighting from Blizzcon. The marine's forearm armor opens up to reveal a retractable wrist blade. The Hydralisk looks mostly conventional, except it seems to have a bunch of little mini mandible arms coming out of its chest.A sketch of what I imagine the new hydralisk's chest might look like, with little mini rib-arm-claw things folded and unfolded. When folded they look like an exoskeletal ribcage similar to a Xenomorph from Alien, when unfolded they look like an arthropod underside with a bunch of little legs.

I have also done a very rough sketch of what I think the new hydralisk might look like from the side but I don’t think I have the proportions all right at all. I’ve only seen 2 pics of this statue, I’ll revise mine if more come out.
