Some F-18s flying from NY harbor to West Point today. I live about 30 miles from West Point and from the time they went north to the time they were going back the other way took like five minutes max, and they weren't even trying.

I think there’s a lot of uncertainty on possible intensity still - hurricanes are sometimes intensifying at an insanely fast pace with warmer waters but wind shear might weaken it badly.

The key things to watch out for: -Reports of more people getting sick -Reports of people in other countries getting sick -Reports of people in uninfected countries getting sick from travel to other countries without reported infection Respective alarm levels 2, 4, 10+ I’m at 1 now.

Would be far happier if this took place in a country with free media. I don’t know how to interpret local reports of around 200 under observation as a result. Also this is early fall so you have a lot of people with seasonal respiratory disease anyway. So lots of fog here

Yeah zero concern over plague but pneumonia of unknown etiology at a research institute is potentially no bueno. Reporting here leaves a lot to be desired. www.cnn.com/2026/10/04/e...

Aviation is probably the most impressive industry in how they have systematically looked at accidents and learned from them. How do you deal with this? Obviously a problem that pilots have to hide if they have mental health issues, but no idea where to go beyond that

Reading accounts of the FlyDubai incident and it’s sort of weird to think that flying is now so safe that about half the commercial plane deaths in the past four years were from probable pilot suicide.

You are doing to lord’s work explaining oil sands. I think people often can’t grasp businesses where building new facilities is ludicrously expensive but opex for existing projects is relatively cheap. Then throw in differences in grade and comparative advantage at differing refiners etc etc

Saw these in the woods - beechdrops, an obligate parasite plant. Looks dead but that’s because it entirely lacks chlorophyll and is sort of squishy.

Can’t decide if this could be big or not - injectable small molecule that kills fat cells. Not as useful as GLP-1s and injection site reactions, but getting rid of cellulite might be big market. Some of same people as Kybella which was big disappointment for Allergan (drug to get rid of chin fat)

Texas is basically saying it wants to encourage fraud as a matter of public policy and you should keep that in mind whenever you see a large firm incorporated in Texas

You would think so, but I once saw a poll where they asked watchers of TV shows if they supported capital punishment. The highest support was those who watched “Touched by an Angel” which was a show about an Angel who helped people at a difficult time in their lives.

Executions in the US are such a shit show.Lethal injections sound most humane but have the most problems because drug firms won’t supply the drugs for ethical/image reasons, docs won’t participate and inmates can be IV addicts so hard to find a vein or dose is wrong. Source: AP

Things you learn researching stories- a 1970s cartoon called Rascal the Raccoon (Ariaguma Rasukaru) caused an ecological crisis in Japan after people adopted raccoons and let them go.

This is why I just don’t see bullish LNG growth as being credible. It’s underpinned by countries creating massive strategic energy dependence on a producer with clear and demonstrated domestic conflict over supply

Tooze had some great stats on just how chronically short Germany was on stuff like copper and steel. They would make tanks because they were about as smart as Hegseth and not have sufficient ammo.

So basically shale prior to the two massive bankruptcy waves- drillers underestimated depletion, and the massive amount of oil produced dropped price through the floor weakening cash flow and making debt unsustainable. Or like pharma without sales exclusivity. Any profit disappears quickly.

Yeah, that I can totally believe. Psychology is probably the hardest thing to study, and I mean that sincerely. Hard to think that we have completely optimized a system to match two people who probably don't even entirely know what they want.

It is a good test of whether a non-profit dating site can have a better success rate than for-profit ones that supposedly want to keep people using apps. Full disclosure- met my spouse 16 years ago on a dating site, so skeptical that apps want to keep people single!

Makes sense - thanks for walking through your logic. I think one thing that’s really helping push prices up is simply throughput. Longer voyages means less carried per month.

The more obvious answer to an economist would be allow more immigration. You can add a point-based system for age, desired skills or whatever, if you want. Just funny to see some hyper-rationalism bolted onto an irrationally limited set of choices.

A Tour de France cyclist eats between 5,000 to 10,000 calories per day. Backpack weighs approximately eight times as much as a TdF rider. So I guess professional bike riders eat over twice as much, proportionally, than bears preparing for hibernation.
