Yale Philosophy Professor and author Jason Stanley warns, “If you're not informed by the facts, you are literally not free in a democracy. It's a form of unfreedom, erasing history and erasing factuality.” NYU Law professor Melissa Murray says that review boards are becoming politicized and are being turned into “propaganda machines” instead of focusing on scientific data collection.

The 118th Congress spent its final days embroiled in another debacle over a spending bill, and it almost brought the government to the brink of another shutdown. “It’s really stupid politics to be for a government shutdown,” Republican congressman Don Bacon of Nebraska tells Ali Velshi. While some Republicans – like former Trump White House senior adviser Steve Bannon – think the solution to the impasse in Congress is to double down, Rep. Bacon is pushing back on that idea. “Hyper partisanship does not work in a government that has three branches,” says Bacon. “We have checks and balances, and James Madison designed this to insist that there has to be some kind of consensus between various factions -- as those are the words he used -- to get to get stuff done.” Instead of “mob mentality on social media,” Rep. Bacon suggests Musk “pick up the phone and talk to your ally.”

The revelation was included in a report by Democratic staff members on the Senate Judiciary Committee who had conducted a 20-month investigation into ethics practices at the Supreme Court.

The president-elect is testing democracy, and so far we're not getting a passing grade.

The Senate must still pass the bill, with a midnight deadline looming.
