6. HAVE FUN! This seems like an obvious point, but keeping this in mind makes decisions easier. If it looks like your players are tired of a scene, move it on. If players want to focus on something you didnt expect, let them! Follow the joy in the story and you'll all have a good time.

5. Worried about the whole party going down? Adjust the enemies on the fly! None of your players know if the monster theyre fighting has 6HP or 60HP - if something seems too hard during the fight, or too easy, nudge the numbers a little to make things more FUN. Speaking of which....

If there's a disagreement, make the call you think is best and look it up later (its ok to be wrong, its better to not get bogged down in rules lawyering, and its ok to learn as you go!) Things can be retconned if need be.

4. Speaking of rules, dont worry about them too much. If there's someone at your table who is a rules dictionary - consult them! If no one knows, look it up later and keep things moving.

3. Your players want you to have fun too. If you do make a mistake, just say, and you can figure it out together. Maybe you need to rewind, maybe you just need to handwave a rule- dont sweat it, just be honest. They're not expecting a pro DM, they're expecting a fun few hours with you, their friend.

2. Your players have no idea if you mess up. They can't see behind the DM screen, they dont know what you have planned. 9 times out of 10, they will have no idea if the room they just entered was even meant to be there. You can move a lot of things around behind the scenes and they'll never know!

Why did we write this? When players first arrive in the Soddenweald, they experience the wonder and magic of the wild surges, and then a group of monks descend to capture those who caused it. It’s the party’s first big encounter, and it leaves a lasting impact on the rest of the campaign.

Wild mages are persecuted for things out of their control, and it’s no secret that the ones most targeted are the swampfolk native to the region. They are the worshippers of Tor, and they’re punished for it by Hush and his zealous monks.
