I saw a progress Toronto ad today that was talking about how things are going really well in the city and I just felt gaslit given the state of the transit network. Transit should be a key part of a progressive vision of Toronto and it doesn't feel like it currently is getting much attention.

Its a shame Toronto doesn't have solar canopies and large EV fast charging stations all over it. Would not cost much and would be actual leadership on EVs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeKz...

Canada may well end up being the only large rich country in the world without high speed rail.

It is! And its not the only thing there.

But then despite all of the talk of Transit first pro density attitudes, we don't actually build a train station unlike japan!
2313
Reece Martin @rmtransit.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
I just want to hammer this point home. The best of our new age development in Canada like in Japan is built in central locations right next to massive rail infrastructure.

It is just a remarkable blunder on the part of the city and metrolinx that this isn't going to have a dedicated subway station on a brand new line that goes right next to it.

"just put the bikes on residential streets!" Is the innovatien super clusters of transportation policy. Does anyone ever ask why people don't just all drive entirely on residential streets?

There were tons of slow zones when the current mayor was elected. It's now been several years and things are worse than they were then...

Wow those fixes for FIFA really had staying power! When will our politicians going to get serious about fixing the subway? It's had problems for years and years now. Minor street car fixes do not make up the difference....

We are getting less locomotives (45 not 57) for roughly four times the price (the Kiwis paid about 300m CAD). The fact that this isn't a major news item is crazy.

We should really think about the things that make Toronto and Ontario special and try to better incorporate them into the airport. Vancouver is great at this obviously, but Portlands insane mass timber terminal also has tons of good ideas.

If you can avoid going outside today, working from home, mentioning to your boss that it's very unhealthy to be out if necessary, you should do that. Particular concentration is basically double what it was yesterday.

Toronto needs to get it together on transit, but something I've previously complained about actually seems like something we might be leading on in NA. Good job Toronto! Actually saw a few vehicles with recently. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Toronto is too slow. This subway line moves more people than the 401 and it appears to operate worse every single year.

It feels hard to justify spending effort on "drone-based digital twins" when we aren't using switches from this century and streetcars are often 30 minutes apart for no good reason.

Lets run more trains! Ok, well it makes sense for them to be smaller then! Ok, but then they would have less capacity. Which is why we are running them more often? But, we have like 10 level crossings?

Annoying because there *are* better tram options out there. This one in Munich is from Siemens, and its literally just for regular tram lines! Our vehicles don't even have all double doors!

Last thing, there is some really nice public art in some places but a lot of the station walls are just blank concrete and are really screaming out to have a mural or something. That's putting aside the somewhat questionable all white "mental institution chic" design language.

Some teenager is going to climb on this like they do on the subway and the GO train and fall between the trains and get completely run over and it will be in part, because we left things in such an unsafe state.

The next train displays are nice, but the actual information on them is frequently incorrect. There also isn't a nice indicator at the terminal stations as to what train is going to leave first.

Much like at Union station and in the path there are some doors that seem to be for fire safety in a couple of places that really ought to be left open and set to close automatically if there's a fire alarm. Having to go through a bunch of double doors. Every time you transfer is annoying.

Trains also stop at the end of every platform rather than in the center and while there is wayfinding it's on the ground instead of on the wall where people are looking at it. Leading to a lot of running to catch one's train.
