I now see Bill Simmons when I see Noel. It’s the face. I hate myself

But we should talk about the Guards, Cooper, our favorite baseball team

Hear you, but (slowly transforming like an Animorph into a Well, Actually Guy) I don’t consider Piqua to be southwest Ohio—it’s part of this really nebulous blob of “western Ohio” north of Dayton off 75 that’s effectively just Indiana

Speaking as the descendant of Ohio Italians, Jerry’s the archetypal Ohio Boomer Dego: reactionary, thin skinned, and makes his own bullshit conservative craziness the entire state’s problem

Bob, I’m sorry to be that BlueSky guy, but DJ’s the most Central Ohio man alive as our representative from the City of Kings, Marion

Truly makes me angry that this fucking kowtowing nerd holds one of the few journalism jobs left when I was doing better work at OU in college

At this point, no. You're still reliant on Whites in the South to reliably win, and the less culturally Catholic they are, the harder they are to flip. You'd need more Northern migration to those states to reliably drown out the Southern white Protestant vote

Can you imagine being his son, being 58 years old, and finally being able to say, “ok so dad, tell me…what were the Aja sessions actually like?”

Meanwhile, us Cleveland fans mind our business because we’ll just be met with the same universal derision and cliche joke about the Cuyahoga burning that the rest of the country’s attitude towards us has become a lame cultural trope. Not even worth the effort

Isn’t Ohio’s Valhalla Hilton Head or is that our Red Neck Riviera South for our worst with money?

Still keeping myself ready that Acton/Brown each lose by a point (which could still totally happen), but it feels less likely by the day, given the environment

Again, Ohio’s got a low floor, high ceiling for Dems currently, but it’s still not Deep South red

Ryan Joseph @rmjoseph23.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I’m from Dublin, and it’s been the opposite. And out in eastern Cuyahoga County near Gates Mills, Orange, etc., which were all country club Repubs, I haven’t seen any Vivek/Husted/Trump signs. Hell, Canton where my family’s from doesn’t have near the amount of GOP iconography it has in ‘20 or ‘24

I do too but you could say the same of any big blue state, too! New York, New Jersey, even California have ruby-red rurals

Ryan Joseph @rmjoseph23.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Totally. My knee-jerk is that people gotta stop thinking of Ohio as Alabama, or even Indiana or Missouri, at this point
111
Ryan Joseph @rmjoseph23.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
You guys are surprised by Ohio? Again, this state isn’t THAT red. The Ohio Dems just haven’t figured out how to work within the state since eastern/Appalachian/and WWC NEO districts went GOP in 2016

This is truly insane, dudes. I also missed this

The unfortunate part of the left-politic commentariat since 2016 is a naïveté about how politics and the world works. If they expect their representatives to take their very niche positions 100% of the time, they’ll be forever disappointed to discover how reality works
110
Ryan Joseph @rmjoseph23.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
lol are you kidding? Not one of these commenters lives in Ohio, much less Toledo or NW Ohio. Which is shame: Kaptur’s a solid rep with whom I agree most of the time. But a bunch of folks not from here asking to sacrifice a reliable Dem rep feels kinda fucked up, just to feel righteous on 11/3

Halcyon Digest, the more I listen, might be a top-ten record for me. Maybe one of the best of the last quarter century. And “He Would’ve Laughed” is one of the prettiest songs I’ve ever heard

Opening line to one of the tracks in the middle of Transistor for sure. Fat P-Nut baseline on top

Fair! But I also don’t need a bunch of people from abroad or up north explaining my country’s politics to me as if I’m also not affected in the same way or completely oblivious to them. They should enjoy the free healthcare
000
Ryan Joseph @rmjoseph23.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
One positive that’ll come from a post-Trump era is hopefully regular ol’ Brits and Canadians shutting the fuck up about American politics for good. I don’t ever talk about their politics because I have more than enough to worry about here. They could do the same!

Going to CCD through my confirmation and hating every minute of it made me a real Catholic

Ryan Joseph @rmjoseph23.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
What no wants to admit is Ohio is not a deep-red state: we just had a bad (but getting better) bench of Dem candidates who didn’t adjust to Dems losing all of eastern/SE Ohio and OLD working-class whites in NE Ohio. Dems just have a low ceiling and high floor here, but we can still win it

Ryan Joseph @rmjoseph23.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Hell yeah, love this sort of academic paper. I did a J-School paper on Simmons’ influence on journalism that was def very long—but Bill’s influenced, for better and worse, so much of online media today!

He, like Brian Phillips, you read mainly for the writing, not necessarily the insight. I critique Klosterman less in this way because Phillips was the king of, “here’s a pretty essay about nothing. Also, he went to Harvard.” The Seinfeld of essayists

I think we win Ohio, and there’s a bigger performance for Sherrod than Acton beating Vivek (both will win, but Husted is such a GOP husk I don’t think he has it this year)

I always think about growing up in Columbus and why so many kids don’t just choose to become Bengals or Steelers (or Colts or Lions) fans because of the Browns, especially when the Guards and Cavs are competently run and Ohio State football exists. That’s effectively colored my fandom, and I’m 36

Hat trick. 16 years old. I’m sure it’s just a phase, like thinking Led Zeppelin’s good

Lotta bad faith arguments in here from people who should know that the reality of not engaging at all will never force your issues to the forefront. I assume these people get that, that change takes time, but if you wanna take your ball and go home, the party will move on without you

Both acts are moral cowardice. Also, in the case of the former, the outcome still directly impacts me, even if it allows the group doing it a chance to pat themselves on the back. I have a right to call them bums for it

I’ll never go back to rewatch it but it did make me realize, “huh, I like reading ESPN The Magazine/GQ/Esquire/Rolling Stone, I should do this as a career.”

But how else will a generation of wannabe magazine writers and editors grow up to realize that the only magazine jobs left go to the dumbest rich kids from the northeast?
