Actually, it has a happy ending. Shockingly.

I always say the same thing: San Francisco, a city of more than 800,000, did not record its 1000th COVID death until August 2022, 2 1/2 years after the start of the pandemic. Why? High vaccination rate coupled with high adherence to masking—without “locking down.”

Spelling Bee doesn’t accept “muon” or “continuo”? Harrumph.

Not heresy. They are quite different. I love both, but I totally get the NO people who don’t like JD. However, I think both types can appreciate Ceremony.

Yes, it’s absolutely the best airport in the US now. Every time I fly out of there now, it’s confirmed. Most space, best food, best seating, best exhibits, best security.

Most underrated, even though it’s a single: World in My Eyes. Almost a perfect album. The only slight negative for me is Clean. It’s a bit repetitive, and DM has a few better closing tracks on other albums (e.g., Insight on Ultra).

Both were such great films. My two favorites of all the Oscar nominees.

A new sort of Schrodinger’s cat, perhaps? I am still upset over the fact that the NYT doesn’t accept “concomitant,” a perfectly reasonable word.

I enjoyed the book a great deal. I would have liked more detail on some of the basic ideas in WWR, but I suspect that would have been difficult to do and limited your audience. (I read the Bryan Magee book years ago and found it illuminating.)

It is beyond belief if you have seen both films in the theater. And my issue with F1 is not that it’s a slick racing film. I liked Ford v. Ferrari a lot. It’s that it’s not a good movie.

In a relatively free election, the highest percentage of the vote Hitler’s party got was about 37 percent in July 1932. And it dropped by November. And yet….

"And the fact that men accept this, that the people’s anger has not destroyed these hollow clowns, strikes me as proof that men attribute no importance to the way they are governed; that they gamble – yes, gamble – with a whole part of their life and their so called 'vital interests.”

Albinoni’s Adagio for Strings at the end of Peter Weir’s Gallipoli. It’s slightly clichéd, but it got me interested in Baroque music when I first saw the film as a teen.

Cortland may be the most dangerous street I have encountered in SF. Last winter I was almost hit in two crosswalks *within 3 blocks* by drivers turning left without noticing me. I was waving a umbrella. That had never happened to me before.

The long-forgotten disease that childhood vaccination is essential for is diphtheria. Before vaccination, the fatality rate was as high as 20 percent in children under 5 and the elderly; 15,000 deaths a year in the 1920s.

New evidence indicates that certain mutations in the human genome arise more frequently where they confer adaptive benefits, challenging the traditional view that mutations are purely random events. doi.org/g92fg2

Mutations driving evolution are informed by the genome, not random, study suggests
A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by scientists from Israel and Ghana shows that an evolutionarily significant mutation in the human APOL1 gene arises not randomly but more frequently where it is needed to prevent disease, fundamentally challenging the notion that evolution is driven by random mutations and tying the results to a new theory that, for the first time, offers a new concept for how mutations arise.

The CDC is falling deeper into crisis. What it means for the nation’s health.
Months of upheaval at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have undercut the agency’s work, employees said, and put the future of vaccines into doubt.
