Im März 1938 dokumentierte die lesbische Schweizer Fotografin Annemarie Schwarzenbach - geboren am 23. Mai 1908 - Straßenszenen in österreichischen Städten und gibt Einblicke in den Alltag des sog. "Anschlusses" Österreichs ans nationalsozialistische Deutschland. Plakatwand, Wien, März 1938.

🧵 Ich finde es super, dass Geschichte auf Social Media zunehmend Interesse findet. Was mich aber irritiert, ist die Praxis vieler Accounts – darunter Bildungsinstitutionen, Museen und Influencer*innen – historische Inhalte zu vermitteln, ohne transparent zu machen, auf welchen Quellen sie basieren.

May Ayim wäre heute 65 geworden. Sie war eine deutsche Lyrikerin, Pädagogin, Logopädin und Aktivistin. Ihr Buch "Farbe bekennen" trug maßgeblich zur Verbreitung der Selbstbezeichnung "afrodeutsch" bei und gilt als Grundlagenwerk zu Schwarzen Deutschen.

Today Prof Motti Golani will be laid to rest after his untimely passing on Friday. Together with the community of scholars of the British Mandate I mourn the passing of a generous scholar and mentor who engaged carefully but rigorously in researching the history of the conflict.

Vor zwei Jahren konnte ich dank @jroeleke.bsky.social mit Walter Frankenstein telefonieren. Er erzählte mir von seiner Jugend im Auerbach‘schein Waisenhaus - seiner „Insel im braunen Meer“ -, und den grandiosen Fotos, die er dort aufnahm und später vergrub, bevor er in den „Untergrund“ ging. (1)

Yesterday, Walter Frankenstein passed away at age 100. Roaming the streets of Berlin with his camera at a young age he was a passionate documenter of Germany under National Socialism and survived the war years and the Holocaust in hiding together with his wife and children.

Habe nun mit mehreren WissenschaftlerInnen gesprochen, die Fachkonferenzen in den USA lieber auslassen, weil die Lage so unklar ist. Die, die doch hinfahren, besorgen dafür eigens neue Laptops und Handys. Surreal. Die breite Öffentlichkeit realisiert noch immer zu wenig, wie ernst die Lage ist.

Wenn Historiker*innen sich irgendwann die Augen reiben & fragen, wie die Rechtsradikalen wieder so schnell an die Macht kommen konnten, lautet spätestens ab heute die Antwort: das konservative Lager hat ein zweites Mal versagt. Der bürgerlichen Mitte war die Demokratie einfach nicht wichtig genug.
