#InternationalDogDay *wheels out Tiney the taxidermy dog* Are you even in a military museum if there isn't a taxidermy dog?
A real grumpy looking taxidermy dog. He is looking right into your soul. He is wearing a medal because he was a British Army mascot...the medal is not for his soul staring abilities.

Oh hello @barnsleymuseums.bsky.social, sorry we're late. Not quite a bowl...not quite not a bowl...please accept these WW1 mess tins as our contribution to #MuseumSuperbowl 26. Comes with a tea diffuser because OF COURSE IT DOES 😍
Steel mess tins in a museum. The big one looks like a big old saucepan with a handle, there's smaller ones in front (they all fit in the big one) and a leather pouch for it at the back. Given that it went to war, it's in pretty good nick.

Just remember @romanpalace.bsky.social... you asked for this. There is a mouse in this painting. It's a Cuneo (IYKYK). Clue is in the alt text. Good luck 🐁
This painting is worth more than my house. It's a Cuneo, he focussed on military and industrial painting (big fan of trains), and he painted little mice in his work. This painting is called Sustaining Forward and shows soldiers queuing up to receive food from a field kitchen. The mouse is also waiting his turn nicely. That's the only clue I am giving you. Good luck.

Today seems a timely day to mention the humble DUKW - amphibious, ambitious, amazing. Launched in WW2, these absolute workhorses ferried men and machinery from ship to shore, deflating their tyres to gain traction in the soft intertidal areas before self-reinflating for firmer ground. IWM (BU 2477)

Today is the 125th anniversary of the Death of Queen Victoria. During her 63-year reign, the British Army transformed the way it supplied and supported operations across a global empire — moving from uniformed civilians, to permanent, professional logistical corps. rlcmuseum.com/queen-victor...
Aw Queen Vic, the very famous photo of her sat looking towards the window holding a big fan. This is a really nice image - a black and white photo of a large floral wreath. This was given by the Army Service Corps. The ribbon at the bottom, whilst in black and white in this image, will have been the ASC colours of blue, yellow and white.

We have been inspired by @zslofficial.bsky.social to undertake a stocktake of the animals in our care. We still have just the one 🐕 Happy New Year Tiney the Dog. #Museum #Stocktake #EveryMilitaryMuseumHasAStuffedDog #ProveMeWrong
A rather handsome stuffed dog in a museum display case. He is medium sized and blonde. He is a good boy and much less trouble than the staff members. Would pet if the Curator let me.

Ooo #ChristmasColours is the phrase of the day 😍 And here, dressed like the little drummer boy himself (because every women with a newborn wants a child to play drums in the nursery...) is an Officer of the Royal Waggon Train. Festive and fetching. #MuseumsDoChristmas #ArchiveAdventCalendar
A really nice oldy-style painting of a soldier with blue trousers, a red, cropped jacket, a million buttons and those fun shoulder tassle thingies, topped with a really fancy hat with a massive white feather. Proper class. He also has a sword, spurs, and shiny shoes.

Whatsapp from the Museum Director: The cafe is closing early next Tuesday so that Santa can attend the Christmas party. *Santa is the name of the nice lady who runs the cafe. I cannot tell you how long it took the staff team to remember that and understand the message. #MuseumsDoChristmas

Day 11 on the #ArchiveAdventCalendar and the theme is #DarkNights 😍 This photo was taken during Op Herrick in Afghanistan and shows the grit of logistics soldiers during operational conditions.
This is actually a banging photo of a big truck lifting a crate with a crane but it is nighttime and it is dark and the whole scene is lit by red, yellow, blue and green lights from the vehicles. It looks festive and ethereal, despite the context of when it was taken.

#ChristmasCards is the prompt of the day from @arascot.bsky.social and here is our absolutely, completely politcally correct version from the #archives. Totally fine for 1944. #Tanks #SecondWorldWar #WhoisComingToTown? #XCompany, that'swho
A black and white image of a military Christmas message. It reads 'Xmas is coming Adolf, and so is X Corps.'. X Corps is represented by a drawing of a tank heading towards Berlin. There is a drawing of Hitler and he looks a bit worried, as well he jolly well should.

#ArchiveAdventCalendar day 9 - and the theme is #nativity 😍 Here's a stable, presumably just like the one the baby Jesus was born in (though I don't remember how many soldiers were included in the official story...) *Actually pictured is a Remount Depot
Horses. Lots of lovely horses. They are very shiny, they have been well groomed. They are in the stable and the black and white photo is labeled 'stable' but in cursive so if it wasn't for the horses you might find it hard to read the letters.

We missed a couple of @arascot.bsky.social's excellent #ArchiveAdventCalendar but we're back with #FestiveFood and this (perhaps not very festive as it was being cooked in July...) roast beef prepared in suitably military fashion 😎
A blacki and white photo of military chefs cooking on an improvised oven outside. The photo is dated 1911. The head chef is stood in a hole at the entrance of the oven. I am probably not describing this very well. There are some brilliant moustaches on show.

#FestiveLights is today's #ArchiveAdventCalendar prompt 🎄 This photo was taken during Op Herrick in Afghanistan.
These are not festive lights at all! What we are looking at is a vehicle depot bathed in the green light of night vision technology as a convoy prepares to go out on ops. We are going to struggle a bit finding festive content in our archive but we persevere.

IT'S #ArchiveAdventCalendar TIME 🎉 thank you to @arascot.bsky.social Today's festive prompt is #Presents 🎁 Here he is, the big man himself, delivering #presents to logistic soldiers.
Father Christmas, the real one, sat on top of a white building holding a big sack of presents. He's got a beard and everything. The building has a sign that reads 'United Kingdom Logistic Battalion' and has the badges of the RLC, REME and the Union Jack.

In memory and recognition of arguably the world's earliest bomb disposal mission - happy #GuyFawkes night to all who celebrate.
An absolutely terrible AI generated image (I am so sorry) of a modern ATO defusing a *checks notes* wooden barrel tied up with rope. Lol. The chap (because of course AI assumes a soldier would be male...) is in a proper oldey-worlde looking undercroft with pillars, candles on sconces and a flagstone floor.

New blog in honour of #WorldPostDay - bit.ly/4ocidsL The British Army postal service - 600 years in the mailing 😎
Two soldiers in civvies working in a very 1990s style British Forces Post Office. This was absolutely essential work to keep soliders connected to their families. The RLC take on this role today. Of particular interest is the British Forces version of the Post Office sign which is on display in the background.

Might have a word with the Collections Team about how they store their recent acquisitions whilst waiting for conservation... (check the alt text for a detailed synopsis of this situation)
At the front of the museum is a big glass building which is the first thing visitors see on arrival. Our Collections Crew have put a concrete lion in there, temporarily, whilst they arrange his next move. This is fine. However, they have positioned the fella so that his bumhole (I'm sorry, there's no delicate way of phrasing that) is facing visitors. The first thing you see on visiting our museum, is a lion's bumhole. The photo is of said bumhole, proudly on display.

The picture really has very little to do with the post but if you don't have a picture, no one will look. It shows our black Rolls Royce (Monty's Rolls from D-Day) on the grass outside the museum. Our WW2 DUKW is in a glass building in the background. We're put the Heritage Open Days bunting and branding on it. Sky is blue, grass is green, it's a fine photo.

Need any ties? We gotchoo fam 😎 Check out our online shop👇 rlc-museum.square.site
Just a load of ties. I have no idea why we have so many ties. They all have a meaning. On the left are RLC ones (RLC ties, RLC association ties, RLC officers club ties...) and then on the right are Royal Corps of Transport ties and out of shot are RASC, RAOC, RPC and ACC ties... honestly we have an actual tie guide book so we all know what we are looking at and what we are selling. It is awesome.

A picture of our museum in which we look AWESOME. Like seriously very very cool. There are two, count them, two rainbows over the building, the sky is brooding, the sun is catching the badge on the museum and our iconic black box of a building looks super slay. Legit.

It's #InternationalElephantDay 🐘 This picture is in our digital archive without caption so I can only go by what I am seeing...but I assume this is a photo of a very slow race. My money is on the elephant.
A black and white photo of a tank and an elephant. The elephant has two riders, one in military uniform. At least four people in uniform are watching the elephant from the tank (which is behind the elephant) and other soldiers are watching in the background.

An artist's impression of what our children's craft area looks like after two full days of the #summerholiday 😂 We wouldn't have it any other way 😍
A First World War steam powered tractor with caterpillar tracks that is in an unforunate predicament, having crashed into a ditch. This thing can roll over barges, but has buried itself nose deep. Several Army chaps are stood on or near it in poses suggesting that they are all mentally scratching their heads about how to a) explain and b) fix this one. It is a mess...much like our craft area. lol.

Tinie? Are you alright pet? It's just that you appear to have lost your actual nose 😬 (Through a quirk of digital capture, if you hit the correct spot on our virtual tour...our dog looks proper weird. Promise, in real life, he's super cute. Visit the tour here - rlcmuseum.com/visit/virtua...)
A yellow taxidermy dog in a museum display case. His nose looks...odd. Squashed in from the sides perhaps. It looks more like a pointy snoot with a black hole at the end, than a normal dog face.

If you know what this is, you might be old. Wear it as a badge of honour 😎 And if you don't recognise it, this is an eight inch floppy disc that was used with military computers to track supplies and distribution. This one could store a whole 80 kilobytes of data. We've come a long way baby 🎉
A museum display in the centre of which is a real old school 8 inch floppy disc. I am old enough to remember these and now I feel bad. Please don't tell the people that I work with, I have pretending to be cool for some time and I think this might blow my cover.

Sharing this excellent representation of us when one of our trustees pops in with a 'good idea' for #BlueSkyMonday 😉😂 The photo was actually taken in Afghanistan (not in the Museum office) during Op HERRICK.
Soliders crouching and ccovering their eyes as a chinook lands on sandy ground behind them. You can almost hear the 'Whacka-whacka' of the chinook blades in the photo.

It is a miniature pagoda...it is not what you think it is. This is the badge of the Chindit units who were active in Burma in the Second World War. On the left is a 'Chinthe' (Burmese for 'lion') from which the units took their name, and on the right is a little pagoda.
A military badge showing a stylised yellow lion on a black background. In front of the lion is a shape not dissimilar to the 'poop' emoji but is in actual fact a little stylised pagoda.

Feeling #hot, wish we were here 🧊 Where was this wonderful #iceberg photo taken you ask? This shot was taken onboard the QE2, during the voyage to the #Falklands in 1982. The ship's carpets were protected with 2,000 sheets of hardboard and soldiers were asked to wear civilian shoes whilst on board.
A photo of blue, sky, bluer sea, and a little iceberg bobbing on the horizon. The photo is taken from a ship which is visible in the foreground and there are two soldiers doing...I'm not sure but I am going to say 'soldier things' on the ship. Looks a bit chilly.
