Todays highlight? An excellent first draft of a manuscript (especially given that the PhD student has been fighting with the methods for a while). Balances out the dull admin tasks! #AcademicChatter

I understand that there are lots of automated emails... but when a request to review a paper first arrives friday 4.30pm and the reminder arrives at sunday 4.30pm, there is a high chance I'll say no on principle (a healthy work-life balance means ignoring work over the weekend).

Dear @plosone.org, sending a review invitation sunday morning, and the first reminder 29hrs later (monday morning) is unlikely to encourage me to review the paper for you. Regards, a researcher who is trying to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

"please contribute your income-generating ideas". Because reading other research, research, papers, grants, teaching, supervision, marking, knowledge exchange, admin, external activities (reviewing paper, grants, examing) are not enough to fill an academics time. #academiclife

Todays pondering: how many hours does the average acadaemic waste on formating manuscripts for journals (by waste, I mean fixing stuff that is not mentioned in the author instructions/reformatting for a new journal after a rejection)?

I started working with genetics during my undergrad in 2000. None of my training (including self-directed learning in data sciecne) has equipped me for installing software on our computer cluster. No bioinformatics support available. Very frustrated and very much stuck!

Today's aim is to write and record four lectures. Just realised I'm boring myself. Is it reasonable to hope I'm better (less dull) in person?!
