Benedikt Gambé wurde nach dem 1.WK durch einen Kolonialoffizier von Kamerun nach Deutschland gebracht. In der Weimarer Republik spielte er Schlagzeug in einer Band. Nachdem er Berufsverbot erhielt, war er gezwungen auf der sog. "Afrika Schau" zu arbeiten. 1940 wurde er zwangseingeliefert & ermordet.

Bild des Gedichts „afro-deutsch I“ von May AyimBild mit Text: „Dualla Misipo, geb. 1901 in Kamerun / Theodor Wonja Michael, geb. 1925 in Berlin / May Ayim, geb. 1960 in Hamburg - So unterschiedlich die drei hier exemplarisch vorgestellten Autorinnen, ihre Lebensläufe und ihr Schreiben auch sind, so sehr verbindet sie die Erfahrung von (intersektionaler) Diskriminierung und Rassifizierung, die sie in ihren Texten thematisieren. Auf Leselisten und in Literatur-geschichten kam Schwarze deutsche Literatur bisher kaum vor. Die Forschung zu diesem Thema nimmt gerade an Fahrt auf, etwa mit dem Band „Schwarze deutsche Literatur" (Hg. von Jeannette Oholi, 2025).
Ein großer Teil der Arbeit wird von aktivistischen Gruppen geleistet. In Berlin bieten etwa „Desta" Dekoloniale Stadtführungen an, und die Organisation „Each One Teach One" sammelt Literatur sowie Dokumente zu Schwarzer und afrodiasporischer Literatur. Institutionen wie Schulen und Universitäten sind im Rückstand.
