A reminder for those at the back.
A redraw of the i nice panel from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, where Batman snaps a rifle in two over his knee.

He says "THIS is the weaponnof the enemy. We do not NEED it. We will not USE it."

I've replace the rifle with a plank of wood labelled "AI Slop"

ISSUE 3 IS HERE! The perfect addition to your fall reading list, @rjaurand.bsky.social's “This Is Not a Place of Honor” combines vampires, vikings, and nuclear semiotics. Oh, and desperate sapphic yearning for a woman who died a thousand years ago. 🩸 Read it here: othersidespec.com/pieces/this-...
Blurry orange and red background. White text reads:

This Is Not a Place of Honor by RJ Aurand

Like a thousand tourists before you, you lay your head on her breast, using your scarf to protect your skin from freezing to her silvered armor, communing with the drumming of her immortal heart. Is she aware of the passage of time? Would waking, for her, be like surfacing from a long, deep dream?

You’ve lingered too long.

"A bog story, it seems, behaves like a bog body, a peat bog, or both." This insightful analysis sets out to define the unifying features of bog fiction and articulates so much about what bog bodies have to offer us in fiction that I would struggle to put to words myself. Truly a must-read!

his bog poems were hugely influential on the way I write about bogs and bog bodies; North (chapbook) and Opened Ground (collected works) are both excellent, although his entire ouvre engages with land and past and embodiment in a way I feel aligns exactly with your metrics.

I rinse mine until the water runs clear. If the pen dried up soaking the nib and feed in a cup of water with a drop of dish soap overnight helps. Then I set it on a washcloth to dry for a day or so. Some people use bulb syringes to flush theirs but I've never bothered.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."
