Had a lovely time at the Symposium on Literature and Architecture 1660-1840 with the Georgian Group yesterday. Learned so much and talked to some cool people. The PhD fantasy is rearing its head again. It would just be so delightful to spend all my time thinking about Jane Austen and the C18th!

Just described Aquae Sulis as the "Dubai of Roman Britain" in a comment on a student's work and I don't know how I feel about that.

Planted a tree. Her name is Juana the Gold (a jonogold apple). Named her, got attached, hope she lives. Il faut cultiver notre jardin etc. etc. #TinyJoys

Ludicrously smiling selfie of me in a pink raincoat posing with a newly planted, very bare apple tree.

The ironic thing about reading a chapter of Luke's Gospel every day through Advent (which has been a fascinating little Advent project) is that I've now got to Good Friday and Easter. I did not think this one through.

Love this! (And I loved Fire Island.) In answer to the question, I do actually think that Austen dismisses or at least challenges the happy ending in marriage. Superficially, it's HEA but that is always undercut by irony or passed over.

Made it to the Jane Austen Society London Branch birthday lunch. Talked to some really interesting and lovely people and John Mullan gave us a preview of his plenary talk for the Baltimore AGM 2025. JASNA, you're in for a treat!

Incongruity between the A&E department's fancy, new junk food vending machine with constant digital advertising and the slide show about healthy eating and leading a healthy lifestyle on the big screen.

It was not fun. Still extremely painful and can't bend it. Going to get a taxi to school. Will be interesting. Will probably go to A&E this afternoon, but today's a big day at school.

How to sleep when you've busted your knee and can't bend your leg? On your back. How not to sleep when you have a hacking cough? On your back. Well, tonight's going to be fun.

I finished the 20 books in 20 days challenge yesterday and I rather miss it. We're those my favourite books? Maybe, maybe not. But they are all important books to me and it was nice thinking about them for a few weeks!

It's 3.46am and I'm lying awake coughing. I hate this so much. I'm not even coughing that much, just enough to not sleep. And I've lost my voice, which is a death knell to a teacher. Took yesterday off but all it takes is one conversation and my voice will be wrecked again. I HATE THIS.

You guys, I was teaching the Aeneid today, and I mentioned how Vergil used condere as the verb for planting the sword in Turnus' chest and how the verb was used for founding a city in book one. One of my students then wrote in the chat eSTABlished. I am dead 💀. #classicsbluesky

Back from the school production of Sweeney Todd. It's a really hard show so I wasn't getting my hopes up but it was absolutely incredible. Star turns from kids I wouldn't necessarily have pegged as thespians. Flawless band. Student directors! Awed by the talent on display.

You know, for a poem supposedly full of propaganda and glorification of Rome and Augustus, the Aeneid is pretty damn sad and tragic. Such is the cost of founding the Roman race etc etc. (Why is it so GOOD??)
