I have a new publication out! This was my first piece of independent research done after completing my PhD. It can be read here: tinyurl.com/49tw32ka The study used iterative surveys to examine how well people understand the principles underlying stratigraphic recording.

Excited to be speaking on how time and place affect archaeological survival and how this can be used in speculative fiction for the Writing the Occult workshop. Adventure archaeology is what sparked my love for the subject as a child and horror particularly pairs with archaeology like a fine wine!

I saw an increadably stupid post on health in the past which stated that people did "just fine" without modern medicine. Several people have already pointed out the obvious about mortality rates (particularly of children), but it got me thinking about how health is often viewed as binary 1/

Niche question, but does anyone know of UK academics who do reasearch on or are intrested in archaeological field work methods? I mean digging and recording (specifically in this case stratigraphy and stratigraphoc recording methods), not fancy science methods.

It is somewhat disheartening to hear the job advice of 'publish more' given to people who have finished their PhD. The system is rigged against independent scholars in archaeology. The literature is locked behind paywalls and publication fees can be high.

I enjoy my normal post-ex work, but there is nothing quite so affirming as community archaeology. Seeing the joy and wonder in people's faces with every new pot sherd and listening to people connect with their heritage has reminded me of the power of archaeology.

Just found some 1986 rates for archaeologists. Supervisors get £7481, the equiv. of c.£29,302 today. That’s almost exactly the same as the min. rate for G4 supervisors recommended by BAJR today -£29,858! Pay increases have been hard fought in recent times, but it was it just for it to stay the same!
A printed list of rates, from £7481 p.a. for supervisors to £44.38 per week subsistence for volunteers.

Archaeologically, the correct way to excavate the Strait of Hormuz is to stick a string line down the middle and remove half if it before photographing, drawing and writing up the layers within. Artefacts found (oil tankers) should be labelled and bagged up for processing.
