‘I didn’t realise they were contraband!’ I laugh nervously as they hand the books back. ‘Dangerous reading!’ they say, smiling as I stuff everything back into my backpack. The books in question:
I’m holding two books (both shades of white) against a marbled floor (and my black bag/trousers in the bottom half of the picture).
The first book is Shame by Annie Ernaux (Fitzcarraldo edition).I’m holding two books (both shades of white) against a marbled floor (and my black bag/trousers in the bottom half of the picture). This is the second book- The Wombs of Women: Race, Capital, and Feminism by Françoise Vergés.

went to the magnificent Catherine Opie showcase at National Portrait Gallery today. i was unbearably moved by it. so filled with love, joyousness, defiance. such a mediation on identity, belonging, kinship, family, community, & care.
A photograph of Catherine Opie’s photo on a gallery wall. Framed in black, it pictures the naked back of a woman with short brown hair and a tattoo on right arm. The back has bloody stick figures of a family scene carved into it- a house, two stick figures depicting women holding hands. She is stood against a deep green background with swirls and patterns in it.

amazing how my brain actually functions when I’m on holiday
This is a screenshot of a world quiz- 6 rows, 5 columns. First world is ‘TALES’, where E & S are yellow. second word is ‘PESKY’, where E is green but S is yellow. Third word is ‘Segue’- all green.

I'll always find the literal-ness of Indian medicines manufacturing both hilarious and deeply practical.
an image of a medicines blister pack - the front reads "anti preg kit", and the back reads ,"mifepristone and misprostol kit", with "antipreg kit' below it, and 'antipreg kit' in hindi next to it (on the right). It then details what the kit contains, and issues a use-warning.

This is one of my all-time faves. we're hoping to do a few more of these - let us know if you'd like to hang out and think about what *other* stories we can tell about abortion. 4/4
a blue piece of (folder) paper that reads (in purple) "I just want to say if you've had an abortion i love you & so do all my mates". There are four hearts scribbled near the corners.

bloody hell. abortion stigma + shame x racist governance x imperialism x horrifying, traumatising ‘care’ from the state
A screenshot from the article. It reads: “When Keira became pregnant with Zammi, she decided to inform Thisted municipality in the hope of working together to ensure she could keep her once she was born. She was nervous going to the doctor, because she says she had previously been given the ultimatum either to have an abortion or face the baby being taken away after the birth. She agreed to undergo another parenting competency test in an attempt to cooperate. But in the session, the psychologist brought up her previous abortions and asked her to show her parenting skills by playing, singing and talking with a doll, checking whether she made eye contact. “The problem is, I didn’t grow up with a doll,” she says, adding that her real baby, Zammi, was busy kicking in her stomach. “They made me draw and they were criticising it, that I didn’t draw a face. I drew a mum and baby.”

in a recent dissertation meeting (via Teams) with my student, i allowed them to use the live transcribe function to aid notetaking. i looked at it to create notes for our required "documentation" - the "AI" censors the word abortion!
a screenshot of one person's words from a transcript, which had a pink box to redact text. It reads: "And taht in this one question you are dealing [REDACTED] saying about ********? Right, and the second part of it was, how is it reflective?"

Thanks, Pauline Milani & Marlyse DeBurgh, for inviting me to a workshop on "Fighting for our reproductive freedom'. Apart from work w/ @luberropizzarossa.bsky.social on transgressions/cacophonies, I'll be presenting (for the first time!) on my new project on abortion criminalisation in GB.
a screenshot of a powerpoint slide - black background, white heading that reads 'any poison or other noxious thing'. on the left, a blue circle with 5 pills - 1 mifepristone, 4 misoprostol. on the right, two headings from newspapers. the first reads, ''Deeply sinister': Police testing women who have miscarriages for abortion drugs', and the second one reads, 'British police testing women for abortion drugs'.

Congratulations, Professor @tizianaleone.bsky.social! Tiziana’s professorial lecture was wonderful, joyous, celebratory, funny, & thought-provoking. 1/
Picture is of a stage with a PowerPoint presentation slide projected on the left-hand side (pink background, text in a jagged box reads ‘data geek’), with Tiziana Leone (brown blazer, black trousers, white shirt) seated on the right.

And (2) this is me at my last UN Commission and Population and Development (2014) with the lovely Nayeli- we’d just addressed member states as part of a debate on ICPD. Clearly, I’ve been stewing over this for years.
Two young women sitting down with shoulder length hair, smiling at the camera. Their names (Rishita Nandagiri on the left, Nayeli Yoval on the right) are displayed. There are a lot of people in the background.

ballots for the UCU NEC, Trustees, and Officers have turned up. no matter who you vote for, please vote. yesterday’s news from Cardiff is sitting heavy; on top of all the blows we’ve taken the last few years & we need a strong, organised union. #ucu
while envelope on a table, the bottom reads ‘UCU (university and college union). Important ballot paper enclosed: please use your vote’

I went to the excellent blossom book house (my old stomping grounds) with the express purpose of getting a copy of Neha Dixit’s debut book. I’ve been following & learning from Neha’a reportage for a while & I can’t wait to get stuck in.
Picture of a beige book with images along the sides of (top right, clockwise): a hinge, pliers the top of a football, a screwdriver, blue thread and a door knob). The title is ‘The Many Lives of Syeda X: the story of an unknown Indian’ and the book is by Neha Dixit.

what a deeply impoverished view of feminist solidarity. transnational feminist solidarity & organising has & will always exist- no matter who is in power in the US. to truly understand it, it begins with de-centring white, liberal, Western feminism. 1/ www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Text excerpt reads: And it became even harder to hold on to the rhetoric of global women’s solidarity once western women became helpless witnesses to the conflict in Gaza. While US-made bombs fall on women and children, it’s hard to imagine marching for American women’s freedoms.

From India' DHS/NFHS-3 questionnaire - does not disaggretate responses for abortion, stillbirth, miscarriage (all very different & require delination for any meaningful analysis). It does not go on to differentiate either. The full questionnaire is here: dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/fri...

A related piece that furthers this argument is this piece we published last year, challenging how SMA as "transgressions" is framed: doi.org/10.1016/j.ws... TL;DR? Become Ungovernable. (image by v.steiner on Instagram). 3/3

I just finished reading Cavallero and Gago’s ‘A Feminist Reading of Debt’- a slim but blistering text. Cavallero and Gago, drawing on years of feminist thinking on debt, link global/national debt to the household (& vice versa); 1/
Image shows a bright pink book with white and blue boxes of text: A Feminist Reading of Debt by Lucí Cavallero and Verónica Gago. The top right corner has a black circle with text that reads: Winner English PEN Award.

On the left hand side of the book is a black ruler and a colourful pencil.

abortions are common, abortions are life changing, abortions are life saving, abortions are acts of care, abortions enable life & living, abortions are profound acts of love. support abortions, no equivocation; no conditionalities; no stigma. #Sept28 #SafeAbortionDay
image shows a collection of abortion/feminism related posters and stickers. it centres a coloured in sketch of a religious figure (suggesting Mary) who is depicted as providing abortion pills. unexpected (but 100% appropriate) Michelle Murphy at the #abortion rights demonstration at the Home Office, run by Feminists Fightback.
The image is of a placard at the abortion rights demonstration outside home office in London. It reads, ‘seize the means of reproduction’ - which is also a book by Michelle Murphy (Seizing the Means of Reproduction: Entanglements of Feminism, Health, and Technoscience’
