The idea that ecosystems carry plenty of back-up, so if a small number of species become extinct there is little harm, has been greatly overestimated according to the largest global study of its kind.

Since 2007 a coal mine has been digging into Somkhele, KwaZulu-Natal. This week we publish a full accounting of what 115 affected families have lost - land, cattle, harvests, graves, water - and what they were paid. New report from Professor Sarah Bracking (KCL) and Dr Danford Chibvongodze (UKZN).
