Yeah, Rufo’s an example of that in a lot of ways. It’s still pretty disorienting to folks who were around when he was getting started.

People are often surprised to learn that Seattle has a conservative Christian think tank, and he used to be affiliated with it. He did a fair amount of damage here, though at least his bid for City Council failed.

Apparently growing up in the D.C. suburbs to parents from Massachusetts and Louisiana, followed by 4 years in western Massachusetts and 30 in Seattle makes me sound like...a Mainer.

Map from the MyDialect app. The red denoting speech that sounds most like me is heaviest in Maine, with fainter red around New England and San Francisco. The blue--speech that sounds least like me--is darkest in Texas, Oklahoma, and the deep South.

It is frankly astounding to me that someone who makes their living online was unaware of this, whether they agree with it or not.

This happened often enough at my last workplace (a private college) that HR tried to mitigate it with rubrics that excluded vague things like "fit" and focused on quals. I'm still not sure how well they worked overall, but at least nobody was allowed to give vibes as a reason for hiring someone.

They are *on it* with stuff like this. In 2024 I was in Namibia during the election and completely off grid (best place to be at the time tbh) and e-mailed the county to find out my options. They sent me a ballot a little early so I could vote before I left.

This is also what happens to a lot of books withdrawn from libraries. We had to do it in the summer so the faculty wouldn't get mad.

The first time I listened to the Iliad (Fagles translation, read by Derek Jacobi, do recommend), I was struck by how graphic it was. Up to and including descriptions of exactly which internal organs a spear pierced on its way through a body, and which innards got spilled on the sand afterward.

Loving this thread; it's been just long enough since I read the poem that I've forgotten quite a few details. As a theme, this would have made for a more entertaining movie, by my lights.

I loved that movie. I'm fond of this kind of thoughtful sci-fi that works through a premise, and that seems, if not always 100% scientifically or technologically accurate, at least plausible.

I saw it at Cinerama, which is about as close to that as I'm liable to get, and it's definitely gorgeous to look at.

I think the proper way to do The Odyssey is as a TV series where you keep everything in. Drop episodes once a week like the broadcast network days so that people can argue about characterization inconsistencies and plot holes.

Someone pointed out that you can make a lot of “well <verb> my <noun>!” constructs work just by getting the rhythm right. Float my biscuits if that isn’t true.

I have been rereading Pride and Prejudice to follow along with the amazing @trungles.com thread and my favorite thing about the Elizabeth/Darcy romance is that it’s not a case of “I can fix him” but more “if he’s worth it, he’ll fix himself”

Yeah, which (to be fair) was what it was presented as and what I was looking for! I appreciated the throughline of the theme of the hero, as someone who is very much a dilettante in the subject.

I know, it’s one of my faves (and a touchpoint for me when I was still working as a librarian—everything’s always new to someone), this particular instance has just felt remarkable. Or maybe it’s just that I’m not usually watching it happen, but it was like r/Seattle one day, everywhere the next.
