I don’t like a lot of things about the world we’re currently living in, but at least The Pineapple Thief have a new album out.

I bet against the Colorado Rockies multiple times last season and you’d be amazed how many times I lost that bet

After two nights of seeing my all-time favorite band again (which, according to my records, go down as Rush shows #7 & #8 for me), especially at this precise point in my life, I feel like something healed inside of me.

“Bravado” and “Time Stand Still” were both wonderful for me personally, but hearing the entirety of “2112” on night one was a real treat!

Stoked for night two with the greatest band in the world!
A pre-concert setting, with rows of people scattered around an indoor arena. A handful of empty seats remain in pockets of the crowd, to be filled as more people arrive. Everyone is bathed in a deep blue light, and in the background is a large LED screen covered with a grayscale graphic showing a variety of illustrations of the number fifty. It’s Rush’s Fifty Something Tour in Denver. It’s gonna be amazing.

A funny exchange I overheard behind me last night at the Rush concert: MAN 1: An arena full of strange, intelligent men—it must be a Rush show! MAN 2: Yeah, except we all have prostate issues now!

That was one of the most special concerts I’ve ever seen and I will remember it for a very long time, man. Anika Nilles is the absolute real deal taking over for Neil Peart, and the other Good Canadian Boys™️ can still rip it up. I almost can’t believe I’m seeing it again in a couple days.

Seated for night one of the greatest band in the fucking world.
A live concert setting from the floor of an arena. The surrounding audience is tinted a deep blue, while the large LED screen displays a graphic depicting multiple variations of the number fifty.

Green Lady Lounge, though I believe right now they are temporarily closed (they had a fire a little while ago) so all their shows are at the Black Dolphin next door. Still highly recommended!

The air conditioner in THE BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER scared the hell out of me. Full-on running out of the room any time that part of the movie came around.

Did the nine albums thing. Tried to keep it only to stuff I first heard between age 12-16, as that was really the most formative time for me as far as discovering music on my own (though there are many other options I could have put here if I’d had more spaces).
My 9 Albums

System of a Down - Toxicity
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Tool - Lateralus
Rush - Roll the Bones
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Lamb of God - As the Palaces Burn
Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon
Ravi Coltrane - Mad 6
Los Lonely Boys - Sacred

George Saunders on using AI: "Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that?"
Have you spent time trying to write or revise with AI? Is there an experiment that would be interesting enough to try?

I have not. Not for a second. To me, this whole idea of using AI to write is . . . anathema. A thing to be most radically avoided.

Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that? Not even in an email and certainly not in a short story or novel.Who are we ceding our authority to, exactly, when we let AI write for us? And why? Why surrender our agency (that amazing ability we have to reach across time and space, with our strange, idiosyncratic phenomenon, and land within the sensibility of another human being) to something that, by its very design, pushes the individual sensibility aside? And in the name of . . . what, exactly? Ease, I guess? Efficiency? The person who chooses to write with AI has also sacrificed, from the start, the opportunity of experiencing difficulty, of struggling to say what he wants to say, of making himself evident in his prose, of trying to find out what he believes. By this, he sacrifices a chance to know himself and his mind better. To me, that’s a shame. And it’s dangerous, because, as we are now finding out, it affects the brain and lessens our capabilities. Thanks, but no thanks, get thee behind me, etc.

The noise I just made when I found out Dave Weckl is playing at one of the jazz clubs here in town next month was like that reconstructed voice of the old mummy that just sounds like a scream.

Currently imagining a shirtless John Cena solemnly announcing the death of Liberty Biberty the same way he did for Osama bin Laden during a live WWE broadcast and feeling a rush of pure adrenaline.

Kind of a deep cut, but Dave Grohl made a full death metal record under the name Dream Widow as a tie-in with STUDIO 666 (the slasher horror movie starring the Foo Fighters) a few years ago, and it’s ridiculously good

Nothing like clearly defining a boundary to someone and then spending the next two god damn hours repeatedly asking them to respect said boundary when they won’t. Fantastic way to spend an evening, maybe even the best.

This was fucking amazing, by the way. It’s called No Man’s Disciple, and if you saw the Rush doc from a decade or so ago (BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE) it’s basically a sequel to that made by the same team.
