When I was teacher training, I'd imagine my classroom set-up. Lots of history teachers have detailed syllabus-specific info walls (that I never once saw a pupil look at...), but I only wanted four things, three of them slogans: "How do we know?" "History is just stories" and "Follow the money"

I want to become a magistrate but I spent two days observing and man it was an eye-opener. The clerks and legal counsel seemed so pressured even with the slow pace of deliberations. Slow is good, I guess, when it comes to justice, but the mags rely so heavily on them.

The “creator economy” doesn’t actually exist
There’s a huge global industry that’s grown up around the idea that anyone can make money out of “content”. But it’s a total fiction

Spot on. ManCity came to mind. For TMOTCO, an official finding that Citeh was financial doping is like, "no shit" (even though it's nice to have an official report). Does anyone seriously think Russia hasn't been, at the least, "fucking about" in elections across the West for years? Stupid to deny.

I loved them as a teenager. Not a Penny More..., for example, was a great read, well-plotted with some lively characters. Made me feel grown-up reading them. Not sure I'd class them as great literature, not read them again as a real grown-up, but there's a LOT of snootiness around his stuff.

There's a very funny "investigative reporter" bit from On The Hour when they sell a recording of Coogan doing a Kinnock outburst to a genuine Sun reporter. Whatever happened to edgy radio comedy...

That thing where you see a debate among people with ill-informed opinions retro-fitting a topic to their core worldview, and start to jump in, then realise you are also relatively ill-informed on the topic and "well, actually" is perhaps the most annoying form of discourse, and just discard the post

🤣 if it is that, and you have to admire Marco Rubio for loyally doubling down his boss's claim that foreigners were involved. (Although: diesel *is* now a very valuable international commodity...) I'm assuming the speed of response suggests they were monitoring Fairford for a different reason...

I suspect much of the 'required' human inputs in that pull-quote only exit due to inefficiencies in processes - not quite 'make-work' but not far off. The question is whether we choose to use complementary AI to create free time, or to 'optimise' human inputs so fewer people are just working harder.

Like you, I kind of don't give a toss about the past. What matters is whether this case finally sees action on financial doping across the board. City, and City's methods, are not the only problem, and there's a much bigger issue further down the pyramid driven by the way money works at the top.

Richard Young @richardyoung.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
The real test is whether the sanctions are enough - and the precedents firm enough - to stop the same financial doping happening over and over again. Spoiler alert...

If you're right about the 30 pts, had it been applied last season, they'd have finished 13th, one above us. Ho hum. My guess? String out the appeal until it's clear XXpts deduction won't relegate them AND they can't win the title, then accept it. Batesian.

Looks about right. But my guess we might still be waiting a while. If the EPL lawyers have any concerns that the appeal process isn't watertight, they'll panic about potential lawsuits once the punishment is applied. It's sure to be *exhaustive*

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

But in the context of national policy, simplistic parent expectations, competition for falling rolls, and the biggie - totally inadequate funding - what can leadership do? AI is supposed to create time redundancy - even for politicians! – not make it possible to continue overwork until we burn out.

We should be asking: "how can we *actually* reduce workload, rather than coming up with some CPD or a new pedagogical model that makes the crushing extra responsibilities look workable?"
210
Richard Young @richardyoung.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I see it most vividly in schools, where the ever-expanding list of responsibilities teachers have, with contact time creeping up as well, looks terrifying to me. But policymakers and leaders say, "oh here's a smart new process or tech tool to make it doable".
110
Richard Young @richardyoung.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
It's got worse, and every new tool that promises to re-harvest time or effort for us just seems to make things worse, because now, "well, you can do more with this..." That Economist clipping is about politicians, many of whom are chronic overworkers. But it's much wider than that.

23 years ago, I wrote an editor's letter for the mag about the disappearance of redundant time. We were getting so good to optimising - and the cults of 'grinding' and presenteeism were getting so embedded - that we were losing something really valuable to our wellbeing and creativity: time to think
