That thing where you see a debate among people with ill-informed opinions retro-fitting a topic to their core worldview, and start to jump in, then realise you are also relatively ill-informed on the topic and "well, actually" is perhaps the most annoying form of discourse, and just discard the post

I suspect much of the 'required' human inputs in that pull-quote only exit due to inefficiencies in processes - not quite 'make-work' but not far off. The question is whether we choose to use complementary AI to create free time, or to 'optimise' human inputs so fewer people are just working harder.

"The citizens of London, who are rich and powerful, and draw their living chiefly from merchandise sent over land and sea, which enables them to live in great prosperity, are the real leaders of the kingdom, without whom the rest of the country would neither dare nor be able to do anything."

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

23 years ago, I wrote an editor's letter for the mag about the disappearance of redundant time. We were getting so good to optimising - and the cults of 'grinding' and presenteeism were getting so embedded - that we were losing something really valuable to our wellbeing and creativity: time to think

Art teacher Mr Milsom (IIRC) walking centre stage, sitting down, and playing Jimi Hendrix's rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner on boom box. That was it. 1985 was different, and in many ways better.

I get why, in trying to push back against fascist or quasi-fascist movements, there's a lot of reverse trolling and using their own tactics against them. But, it does suck. In general, I don't like having my views repped by someone doing internet clapback in the style of a 14 year old.

I'm sure the new agreements between AI players to limit their immediate development "to save humanity" has nothing to do with the massive increases in compute needed for fresh frontier expansion at a time when existing financial commitments are looking a tad... terrifying?

With the increased use of AI, organisations and jobs are effectively redesigning themselves. This is happening without management direction and often without management knowledge. This isn’t a ‘new age of empowerment’. It’s creating new silos, new bottlenecks and new turf wars.

Really interesting piece, and an annoying new angle for a report I've pretty much finished for a blue chip client. AI isn't just taking away juniors' exposure to project work; it's removing the strong bonds between disciplines horizontally, too.

They're often *so close* to accepting that defining people as nations or even tribes is really silly. If they could just go that *little* bit further and accept the real lesson from history is we all have to share physical space and resources more equally without killing each.... Oh, yeah, Brexit

Cheery. Remind me again why the existing education system is such a great model that just needs a few tweaks? (To be clear: Burnham needs to find an extra 20% for the education budget NOW to support stretched teachers regardless of what long-term reforms can be enacted to get our kids ready for C21)

Most reasonably intelligent people make mistakes and recognise that fairly quick after the fact (in my experience anyway). But there’s a class of people who make a living overanalysing those mistakes and publicly scolding them for them. The second is more tiresome than the first.

This is particularly fascinating, because a grown-up should be incapable of feeling humiliated by people they consider 'nobodies'. A grown-up doesn't get angry or hurt by people they genuinely think are worthless, stupid or nasty. Perhaps... Nigel just isn't very grown-up?
