Today’s @unaids.org report shows that by the end of 2024, AIDS-related deaths were at their lowest in over 30 years. But this data was collected before the collapse in international HIV funding — a crisis that could undo decades of progress.

We are gravely concerned about the decision by the U.S. Administration to cut more than 90% of contracts held by USAID, many of which they had already deemed “lifesaving”. This abrupt action could have devastating effects on the HIV response and put years of progress in jeopardy.

HIV has changed for the better thanks to advances in medication, but AIDS is not over because many people in developing countries still cannot access lifesaving antiretroviral treatment. #WorldAIDSDay
In 2023, Aids claimed 630,000 lives worldwide. 1.3 million individuals were newly infected with HIV. Almost half of these new infections were among young women and girls, bringing the global total number of people living with HIV to 39 million.
Of those, nine million did not have access to lifesaving antiretroviral treatment. Every week, 4,000 adolescent girls and young women are newly infected with HIV, while only half of the 1.7 million children living with HIV had access to the treatment they needed.
HIV infection rates among key populations were from nine to 23 times
