Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 24/08/2026I love living every day on a whim. I hate when someone or something interrupts said whims. 000
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 31/07/2026It just depends on what you want out of that gaming experience. Plenty of players prefer to get that introspection elsewhere and use gaming as just play. Gaming touches everyone's life in different ways and there's not just one "correct" way to play. 000

Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 18/06/2026It took me forever to try to put this feeling to words, but I think I've simplified it down to "It is unethical to have vast amounts of wealth and/or fame, regardless of how you got it or how you use it." No one person should be allowed to have that much power and influence. 000

Reposted by Richard Stackmerr-itt came from outer space @merrittk.com · 13/05/2026i sometimes see indie devs lament that players aren't interested in their game and then speculate as to why that is, when i'd guess that 99% of the time it's just that people haven't heard of it and that the vast majority of steam users don't seek out or play indie games 1030514
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 25/04/2026I like it! Would you mind adding some visual separation between each individual recipe? I think that would make this easier to read at a glance. 110
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 23/04/2026I think that's why I like Bethesda style open worlds. In a way they require you to design your own gameplay loop, and you can change it whenever you want. This is different from just playing a different game, since it maintains world and character consistency. 000
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 23/04/2026Rigid gameplay loops in video games are a huge turn off for me. I often see people talk about a good gameplay loop getting them into a flow state, but the opposite is true for me. It becomes old fast, and I just feel trapped. 110
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 22/04/2026I came across this poignant YouTube comment today. There are so many layers to #privilege it can become easy to forget how much you have from just living in a first world country. Race, gender, and sexuality are the most talked about, but it goes even further beyond that. 000
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 15/04/2026You can tell the economy is shit when what most gamers care about most is hours played vs cost. Online game discussion has devolved to meet this lowest common denominator. 010
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 15/04/2026The truth is always full of complexity and subtlety. Those looking for the short concise answer to a question are not curious, they just want to feel the comfort of understanding. But they are only lying to themselves. Actual experts know that their understanding of a topic can never be complete. 000
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 05/04/2026This past year I've felt an incredible sense of satisfaction with my life as it is now. I truly want for nothing. I deeply appreciate everything I have and all of my privileges which have led me here. 100

Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 01/04/2026I think this is why people dislike fetch quests, because they kind of feel meaningless. But what if the fetch quest was just one part of a grander whole, like finding a stone puzzle key to open an ancient tomb, it adds meaning. 000
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 01/04/2026What I'm trying to avoid is overly simple quests that become boring, and I believe that this happens because the objective is too simple. I'm hoping that stringing together objectives in a tree-like hierarchy will be more satisfying than just completing each one at a time. 000
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 01/04/2026I'm calling the procedural RPG backend "Chronicler". I'm designing a system based on the concept of "quests as mysteries", where the player must solve a quest by completing several smaller objectives. Each of those small objectives can have complications that lead to other quests. 200
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 07/02/2026Where are the protests with people holding signs reading "Let's Calm Down and Work This Out" or "We're All In This Together" or "Down With Partisanism!"? Hatred is, has been, and always will be our truest enemy. 010
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 07/02/2026Politically, I consider myself a bit left of center. That doesn't mean I "kind of agree with everyone" and I'm avoiding conflict. It means I don't agree with either extreme, and I'm in conflict with both at once. I live in the grey sea of scientific pragmatism - the only reasonable place to be. 000
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 07/02/2026This goes to show how varied the different forms of ADHD can be. I'm diagnosed ADHD as well, and I love sitting down for an hour, learning rules and pondering how systems will interact. 4290
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 07/02/2026I'm not sure if I'm understanding your point correctly, but to me beliefs have nothing to do with genes (and if we're talking evolution, we're talking genes). On the scale from nature to nurture, beliefs are all nurture. They are indoctrinated into you by family and peers. 110
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 04/02/2026People (especially those living within capitalist structures) tend to belittle those who are living, in their words, "safe" and "comfortable" lives. I prefer describing it as "intentionally pursuing stability and contentment in a money-obsessed results-driven society". #contentment #anticapitalist 000

Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 02/01/2026My RPG game backend is able to load resource data from embedded json (like location types), and provides a way to send queries and commands from any game client. Here's an example of how a client may use it to get all the locations in the world. #chronicler #rpg #programming #gamedev 041
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 01/01/2026I'm currently working on a #.net library for a procedural #rpg backend. The idea is I can implement mechanics and systems first, and do it in a way that I can add the visuals and sound later (the "client" so to speak). #gamedev #programming 031

Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 17/12/2025The best part of modding Skyrim isn't fixing the bugs or modernizing the graphics, it's having complete control over my experience. It's a comfortable middle ground between the gamer and game developer within me. 020

Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 13/10/2025Games require way more filler than written fiction. This is when fodder becomes necessary. Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 13/10/2025It's so common for combat mechanics to be designed separately from roleplaying mechanics. If the game has lots of combat, you need lots of stuff to kill and to kill often, so thinking about whether it's ethical to kill them or not every time becomes monotonous... 000
Richard Stack @richardkstack.bsky.social · 13/10/2025Random #gamedesign thought about the morality of cannon-fodder species like orcs: To me this is a symptom of tabletop storytelling being part narrative and part game. There's an eternal conflict between the two that's difficult to overcome... 310
